Before you choose to ignore or read on, let me make this clear. This thread is about "powering ON" the modem not about "connecting".
Scheduling the PC to power on and connect for the 0200-0800 period is a well discussed and explained topic. But the modem is left ON always. If im going to sleep at 2200 the modem is left ON at that time and switched OFF only when i wake up. The modem is left on for an extra 4 hours. This is a waste of energy, addition of heat in the room, reduction of device life, distracting lights, etc...
Apart from this if you forget to switch it on that night, an entire night worth about 3.5GB+1.3GB is wasted. The PC powers on to find no connection, energy is wasted. Hard disks are aging for no reason.
Some of you may find this insignificant but if you add it up days to weeks to months it ends up being quite significant.
My quest is to make the modem power on along with the PC. It is quite simple and adresses all the problems mentioned above. There are two methods that i can think of easily. 1) Use a relay from the PC PSU to switch on the modem, 2) Power the modem from the PC PSU.
The second is the simpler of the two. The Molex 8981 connector (CD Drive, HDD, Fan) from the PSU has a +12V (yellow) and ground (black). A male Molex connector, some wire, a DC connector is all thats needed costing about INR 35-40.
Now MY porblem is that my modem uses a 12V AC 1200mA input. The PC PSU gives only a DC output. What can i do? Is it safe to directly connect it? Or is there a simple way to convert DC to AC? Please help.
