Default Own modem after returning BSNL

    Team,

I got a new broadband connection from BSNL, basically no other choice, in my area.

    Model Name : T1-B-DSL699E9.4U6-5
    Firmware Version : 10.4.3.12.12

Earlier I wanted to rent it, but was unwilling to spend 500 as initial deposit. So, in good faith I went ahead and paid BSNL 1800 to purchase it.

Now, the following is my Line statistics.
SNR (Downstream) 6.5 dB (Goes to a max of 12dB - evening hours)
    SNR (Upstream) 13.5 dB
    Line Attentuation(Downstream) 47.0 dB
    Line Attentuation(Upstream) 31.5 dB

    Connection Capability : PPoPE/ G.DMT (earlier ADSL2+)

Splitters removed. No phones used. Only modem is connected directly to line.

From day one, I am having disconnection issues. I have searched and searched and basically past 10 days have learnt more about ADSL networking than I would have cared to know. Made a thousand calls to BSNL, guys came in and checked the line. They (the lineman) says the line is fine, but even a child can say there is noise (again no phone when connected, no splitters etc.)

Yesterday, they made some changes in the exchange and I am getting slightly better SNR values, (around 10-12 dB) but still disconnecting. I have seen across some forums that different modem give different SNR values across the same line, and hence suspect may be the hardware.

    Now my question is this:
If I go to BSNL and want to return their modem and replace it with my own (e.g. Linksys-WAG120N (Rs. 4500) or Linksys-WAG160N Wireless-N (Rs. 7500)), would they return my money (with probably some clerical processing fees).

I would have loved if some of my friends / neighbors could have a alternative equipment for me to test it with but that's not the case here. So before risking that kind of money I want to get advice particularly from users who are routinely living with low SNR and high attn values.

    1) They are not going to return back the money nor going to take the modem back let it be any service provider
    2) There is a Bsnl customer Grieveance Rederesal section where online you can give complaint directly to the GM of UP and District GM of Bsnl go here www.upe.bsnl.co.in there in left side of your screen click on Customer Grievance Redressal fill all the neccessary info once you register the complaint you will get a complaint no like e:g (HBKRP 15564) keep this no for future use and your work will be done within 48hrs and even you will get a call from the GM
    3) Ask the BSNL lineman to provide the service cable without any joints ,b'coz if any joint in the cable it will affect ur download

I to faced the same problem for a week even after giving complaint to the nearest Bsnl section they didnt rectify it so i gave complaint directly to the GM and believe me the next day mrng 8:30am the bsnl guy came to my house and the issue was resolved

    waiting for ur reply

    Happy downloading

    Default BSNL Modem

    Thanks for your replies.

Thanks for pointing out the grievance route. I have been using it for a while. It's the only way I have found that BSNL guys atleast respond.

It's not that these guys are not helping me or attending to my calls. They are. But in a way that I feel talking to a bunch of guys, who no nothing but wires and nothing else. Terms like SNR, ADSL, G.DMT are all to unfamiliar to them and they stare at my face with a blank look the moment I start talking a language which in my opinion is their day to day job.

Also, I am burning my hand and many sleepless nights on my end to understand the exact nature of the problem, all in a attempt to know confidently and say, Look guys, this is the issue, now go ahead and rectify it.

Because in the past 10 days or so of interaction with them, all i could see is a number of guys calling a number of guys and the only 'technical' person who came to visit was the 'lineman' who somehow couldn't hear any noise in the line and the installation person who plainly said "This is a line problem, we have to correct it first". Amidst all this monkey partying and blame throwing, I as a customer am suffering and am not getting the services I paid so dearly for.

Just to add, in my attempt to isolate the problem and know for sure if the hardware can be a issue, I want to use a alternative device. This way if I get better signals or better connection I can go confidently to BSNL office and tell them to replace it with a better performing hardware.

It would be best if BSNL themselves acknowledges. But before that I have to be dead sure and prepare a case (with proof), otherwise it's just a hypothesis.

One way is spend 7500 Rs. and test it. My gut feel says it will work, but before I do that, I am exploring other alternatives it possible.

Silly as it might seem, but does any one knows if a Ubuntu 10.04 can be configured to dial a PPoPE, without going the BSNL provided modem.

    1. Check your splitter. Make sure all connections come after the splitter. You may also try connecting directly to the modem and check. This may help

I have disconnected all phone lines and modem is connected directly to main line.

No phones and hence no splitters.
To simplify the setup and to take the phone variable out of the picture.

I think you should try an ADSL splitter even though you are not using a phone. The splitter doesn't just split the wires physicaly. It has electronic components which fliter the signal. Im not an electronics expert but its worth a try. Its Rs. 25 vs Rs. 4500.

    Talking

    Hello Friend,

Not sure of your current status now, below is what I want to convey..

I have been a happy BSNL BB user for the past 4 years. Never had any problem till last month. Started having DNS problem, connection issues, no page displayed problems continuously. I made a complaint, made a complaint and made a compliant and simple nothing happened from BSNL Customer Care.

I got so pissed off and took a days off from my work, went to BSNL office and requested to meet Area Engineer stating I am planning to take 10 new connections (bluffed so that I can talk to the Area Engineer directly). I was immediately taken to meet AE.

The moment I met him, I explained every single problem that I went thru for the past 1 month with categorically explaining the problem of the dates, with the problems with the timing my connection was having problems.

He promised me to address this issue within 2 days. On a monday morning, one senior person turned up to my place and was checking the connectivity (seriously he is very knowledgeable as he was checking for all these SNR & DB stuffs). He said he is suspecting its a HW problem with the modem, so he connected his modem (guess he uses it for testing purposes) and he made the required configurations and said to observe the performance for 2 days.

Boom.. it was working fantastically fine. I thanked him so much and brought a new modem from BSNL. and Happy going now..

    Default Nice to hear that

    Hello Vinurv,

    Nice to hear that.

I guess you should share your experience with other people also.
With so much of -ve impressions people have for BSNL, such experiences can bring a positive light.

Also, at this point, let me share that my connection is also running good.
A lot of effort was spent by BSNL people at the exchange and as a final resolution they seem to have me connected to a completely isolated channel and hence less noise.

I do face problems from time to time, but they get rectified after I call up the call center. And most of it have to do with the exchange fault rather than at my end.

I guess all this brings us to a positive light w.r.t. BSNL and the services they offer.
