Default anti virus Software-whixch is best?

HI, I got my laptop in July 09 with norton Anti virus. After one year i changed to Kaspersky anti virus costing Rs 600.it went out of order twice last month.what happened was the display said your computer is at risk-data obsolete and all.i could not connect to wi fi modem bcoz that was disabled by the AV.Not knowing what to do i simply shut down the laptop.next time i restarted it it came to life and all ok.the computer shop whcih sold me the AV said u hav to update often>how do I update when it doesnt allow conn to NEt?Has anyone else faced similar problems? then the serviceman said i have to click on qurantine and delete the virus data listed there.what i want to know is whether Kaspersky when disabled will block conn to to the net?both my wi fi and lan con were disabled.PL clarify on this.now everything is ok.Further there are 3 types of AV.simple AV, internet security and something else. Please advise me on how i shud go about next time.

    1. May be your PC is infected. Format it and reinstall Windows.

    2. You can alway use a Internet security suite which have firewall, antivirus and anti spy.

    3. No reports about Kaspersky disabling the wifi / LAN. It may be due to Conficker or similar virus which disables net/ LAN to make sure that you won't be able to update your antivirus.

    This may help

    4. I am using Zone alarm Firewall + Avast + Adaware. No head ache since a long time.

    Hope this helps.

I have been a long-time fan of Zone Alarm, and even a paying customer. However, what was small and efficient has become huge and unwieldy. We have an old laptop with only 256Mb of memory, which is pretty slow anyway, but with a security system taking up half that memory? Unusable.

I've moved to Linux on my machine, but for the occasional Windows boots, and the laptop, as of now it is Microsoft Security Essentials. For once, MS seem to have come up with something light and, hopefuly, effective. Byebye Zone alarm, even with licence time yet to run.

There is always a downside with MS: it turned on Automatic Updates. The laptop was at it all night and into the next day. Not something I needed on a machine that is due for a re-install anyway!

HI, I dint have any problem when using NORTON fr 1 year.i changed to kaspersky bocz i felt Rs 1650 was too high.I encountered this prob only once.the AV going obsolete, ur database is at risk etc the msg said.and it disabled my wi fi and lan connections.i shut down my laptop and opned it after one hour.all ok then.i connected to modem and updated the AV.now all is fine.can u tell me we can set update as "auto" or "manual"?why there are 3 types of AV packages?shud we install "internet security" av?but i feel all this hype about anti virus is bunkum.these sw companies seem to make money by timing the AV life as 365 days i feel.what is this" update" where it downloads some kb etc.has anyone read the AV CD and seen what it contains?PL clarify if u know?

Internet security suite has much more features than a normal antivirus. It has firewall, antispy, anti malware and an antivirus along with other features likes identity protection, notification for registry modification etc.

For higher level of security, you need to install a security suite. As mentioned above, I am using an Antivirus + Anti malware + Antivirus which is almost equal to a security suite.

Whichever anitvirus / security suite we use, we are never safe from malware. There are some basic rules to stay from malware. And the first amongst them is not to insert an untrusted USB drive in to your PC. While using the net, don't click " loser ", " you have won..." type of ads. Some cracks also contain malware which are not easy to detect.

You need not pay for a security suite. You can get a Internet security suite free from Comodo. Some useful applications

    1. Firewall - Zone alarm, Comodo

    2. Antivirus - Avast, Avira

    3. Anti malware - Adaware, Malwarebytes

    use Bitdefender/Kaspersky
i have been using Bitdefender.never had a virus problem.

antivirus never stops network connections.internet security does till you make you network trusted or add it to exceptions.

when a antivirus updates, it updates it's databases.this is needed coz everyday some new viruses are being written.so the AV has to know how to act against each one of them.

if you are a little careful while surfing net, any antivirus can protect you computer.don't click on random ads,pop-ups,prize money, small games.download only from trusted sites.
