Dear All,

I am a subscriber of BSNL DataOne broadband services from Kolkata. I use a Huawei MT882 modem/router to access the services.

Based on my experiences I want to share my experience with all users and elicit their comments/criticisms/accolades.

To configure the MT882 to suit one's typical usage intentions:

Assumptions:
1. Home use
2. A torrent client for downloading
3. Moderate use scenarios.

Hardware:
1. MT882
2. Desktop/ Laptop or both

Process:

Save and reboot after every modification entries:

1. Connect all the cables as per directions given in the BSNL site and also as per Huawei's product manual.
2. Fire up your machine and swith on the modem.
3. When you see all the indicators stable launch IE and type in h**p://192.168.1.1
4. Type in admin to both user name and password boxes.
5. You should now be presented with the router's main page showing the summary.
6. Expand the home section and go to the wan settings page.
7. Ensure that the PVS = 0, wan type = RFC2684Bridged, connection type = Pure bridged, VPI/VCI = 0/35 and Encap = LLC.
8. If you have only 1 machine DHCP doesn't matter but better to enable it. How to configure your machine to have a static IP and allied matters like forwarding your ports if you use a torrent client to get best p;ossible d/l speeds and to get the max possible juice out of your bandwidth, please consult Portforward dot com.
9. DNS, please enter 61.0.0.5 as primary and 61.1.96.69 as secondary (as per Calcutta Telephones).
10. Enable NAT. I also enabled UPNP to add UPNP port mapping by the torrent client, however, do understand that the latter step is controversial as per the security angle in the net, but I have good antivirus, firewall and antispyware and therefore feel reassured and secured to enable it. Leave rest untouched.
11. Expand Lan settings and go to firewall rules. Enable blacklist status and allow attack protection and DOS protection.
12. Go to ADSL settings and set modulation to multimode, EC/FDM mode to EC and Bitswap = Enable.
13. Expand tools section. Enable discard ping from wan side.
14. Go to system settings and click save and restart device.
15. Hopefully you are done and then configure your PPoE dialer to connect to the information highway
