    Default Buying a Router

    Greetings to all.

I have an MTNL ADSL 2+ Modem (Model Number MT 882) which is connected to my desktop and that's how I've been using internet for the last 4 years.

Now my two younger siblings who live in the same house are both getting laptops and are demanding wireless internet. My brother (21yrs) is sure to do a lot of gaming and torrents and my sister (17yrs) would also be fairly aggressive torrent user.

I use the internet on and off throughout the entire day and depend on it for a lot of my work and so naturally I am very concerned as to how it will affect my work and since I pay for the internet, it would be quite annoying if their activities choke up my access.

I wanted to get a router that would allow me to control and regulate the bandwidth these two have access to. I read that some routers have a QoS (Quality of Service) feature that allows reserving bandwidth. I also saw something that goes by the name of DD-WRT but I could not make much sense of it. I am new to the wireless world.

I have checked numerous online forums, have googled everything but partly due to limited technical knowledge, I am not getting much success. There were numerous such discussions on this website and the responses seemed sensible and well informed. However, I did not have any luck. So I decided to post.

Can someone suggest an Adsl Router under Rupees 2500 that would allow me the above control feature? I read about companies like Linksys, Netgear and D-Link that provide this facility. Alternatively, can any software help me do so? I also read about Netlimiter and BW Meter. Will they be of any use?

Also, is would it be possible for me to block torrent access for them altogether without them knowing? I feel dirty sounding so controlling but internet is really my lifeline.

Thank you for your reply or even any effort you put for my benefit.

    Welcome to indiabroadband!!

if two more start using with such agressiveness of gaming and torerents,
your bill would boost to skies LoL.
    Ok
you might choose a higher plan with 10gb or so download as unlimited with low speed wont work for gaming.

you might get a new modem with 4 ports and wi-fi built-in. MTNL might charge you around 2000 for that +taxes as as applicable.

there are second hand refurbished sellers at noida , please see this link
http://www.indiabroadband.net/airtel...tml#post275730 (Refurbished ADSL Modem & Wi-Fi for Sale at Half Rate) they are cheap enough
Many a time, youth know things better as learn faster from surroundings and they come to know that you blocked , within no time.

however , be ready for a hole in the pocket ....... due to heavy usage, or change the package.

    Thanks. I'll check it out.

Maybe I'll eventually resign to a fate of low connectivity.
