    Question ADSL Splitter - Is there any point in buying expensive splitters ?

    I've seen ADSL splitters ranging from Rs.35-400. I was just wondering is there any point in purchasing Rs.400 splitters since one of my splitter which was provided by BSNL is working fine for years. And, I'm 100% sure that it's not a Rs.400 splitter.

    I've compared the specs between the expensive and the cheapest one, but couldn't find any difference and all of them are made in China.

    1. So what is the difference b/w a Rs.100 splitter and a Rs.400 one ?
    2. Is there any point in buying expensive splitters ?

    better be happy with what BSNL supplied, as long as it works. costs change by brand name. ON Semi components are costlier compared to Chinese and far east equivalents. marketing people add margins.

    Costlier splitters use many have other features like protection. off band attenuation of audio filter might be better in costlier filters.

    Link below shows how a good or standard splitter looks. The protection device can be seen. It is a two pin gas arrestor.

    The ones supplied cheap have only coils made of drum core. and cheap capacitors are used.

    It appears like that. In technical reality, we need some standard to save human life. With my 40 years service in telecom, i would not look at this so simple to answer. We saw enough troubles and some lives lost due to poor protective equipment.

    Protection from environmental hazards is a specific and important topic.

    @mvs_sarma
    Many adsl modems go faulty because of damage to the input signal IC inside the modem, due to electrical surges/ and possibly Lightning strike as CHEAP Adsl splitters connect the telephone line DIRECTLY to the modem.
    Users have reported burnt modems also.

    These surge limiters help to a certain extent, and if lightning strikes, even these may not help.

    In old BSNL telephone junction boxes ( yellow type with Rj11 port ), you will find similar lightning arrestor circuit.
    Now discontinued due to possible attenuation of BB data signal.

    So if the ADSL splitter comes with lightning arrestor circuit, will that cause attenuation of BB data signal ?

    gas arrestor would not cause, while use of MOVs might suffer higher frequencies.

    @mvs sarma
    Source : Google search.

    lightning protection for WAN
    Generally speaking, the WAN network are out of damage of direct lightning, if 1mm2 copper line is attacked by the lightning of 10KA,
    they are fused automately.So, the WAN network is mainly threated by the inductive lightning hazard. ADSL router line are introduced
    from telephone lineof telecommunication office,under this situation,they can easily generate the strong inductive lightning current,
    which can damage the ADSL router
    ,seriously speaking the lightning current invade into the indoor, and damage important equipment,
    such as server and switch,etc, more serious speaking they may cause the fire in the computer room. So, we must add telephone
    signal SPD,LDY-RJ11 at the front of ADSL rounter to protect the ADSL signal line.
