Question What to buy in order to Set up Wi-Fi?

I am having a MTNL broadband connection with D-Link GLB-502T modem. Its a fixed modem connected to my computer.
now I have purchased a laptop and want to Switch to Wi-Fi.

    So what is more preferable?
A wifi router or wifi modem+router

    Actually whats the basic difference?

How much will be the cost and how can i set up it wid my pc?

as i will be configuring it with my desktop only...

    plz guide me through this.....

    Hi,

Since you have the modem already, I'd suggest that you go for a router since that is less expensive than a modem + router.
A modem + router could have been purchased if MTNL was not giving the modem at the first place.

A router can be purchased in the range of 1200-2000 and beyond, depending on its makes and features!

If it's possible for you to exchange the modem for a combination modem/router, I'd do that even if it costs you. Why? Because then the hardware and configuration is the responsibility of MTNL. It is too easy for a service provider to blame your equipment for any connectivity issues otherwise.

By defult, if MTNL gives you a wireless device, that is a modem+router. Optfor the wireless option when taking the connection from MTNL and you have it!

Even if MTNL charges a bit more and will take the modem away when you switch, I would still get their modem.

Because when you change to another provider, there's no guarantee that the MTNL modem will work, and there's no guarantee that a third party one would work with mtnl. It should work, but if it doesn't, you have to diagnose it.. Not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Buy any router which has support in India. Call their customer care, and ask them to help you in configuring the device. All ADSL modems are compactible with any ADSL service provides, no matter whether if its, BSNL/MTNL/Airtel/Reliance. All you have to make sure is that you opt for an ADSL connection. So, in my opinion buy I would suggest that you buy one than renting. In that cost range that you metioned, you will easily get from netgear/dlink. For better ones try Belkin/Linksys.

But sometimes there are odd problems where routers won't work even when configured correctly. For the 600rs additional that it would cost a year, it would take over three years to get back the return on a 1800rs router. In 3 years, technology changes, and when you are just renting from the isp you always have the latest gear working correctly.
