Thumbs up Using 3G phone data plans on Unlocked data card

    Hi Geeks,

Need your help on the following :

Using 3G sims on unlocked data cards have become common practice now.

What I want to know is -
If I use a 3G sim on a data card (+phone data plan) on a 3G data card, will the telco/operator know this?
If yes - how do I make them think I'm still using a phone.

As far as techincality goes - whenever we use any device on a network; the device identifier is passed on to the telco - so they know my device's brand/model, OS/OS version (smartphones), device data capabilities (GPRS, EGDE, UMTS, HSUPA et al), display details (phone/tab/phablet et al)etc.
Does the same thing happen for data cards too?
My guess - they do and their network/bandwidth management hinges on this.
As most data card pipes are on a different bandwidth rule (low latency, high potency) than mobile devices.

If yes, can we play with any files to camouflage our device footprint and give it a phone identifier.
(like browser identifiers - having an IE identifier for mozilla or vice versa).
There must be some ini/inf files we can play with.

    Reasons for this project:
    1. Data plans for 3G phones are much cheaper than data plans for data cards.
    2. Most 3G plans have a rider - where to be used i.e phone or a data card.
ex. the new Reliance Rs 123/- 3G pack is for phones/tabs only. They even have a disclaimer for de-activation on violation.

If anyone has done something similar - do let me know
If my above hypothesis works - then all of us can save a lot of money.

    Thanks in advance

Yes ,operators will know which device your using + imei number of modem/mobile.

I got better speeds on 3g modems than mobile.....speeds were fluctuating while downloading on mobile and also while tethering.

I have used airtel/vodafone/idea/bsnl/aircel 3g plans and there are no separate 3g plans for modems, all plans can be used on 3g modems/mobiles but i'm not sure abt reliance, we don't have reliance 3g here , they don't have 3g license in andhra pradesh.

Operators will know the device that your using and the same plan wont apply for the dongle. I similar thing happened before when some years ago there was a Rs99 3G plan where you got I think unlimited data, I tried that same sim on my iphone and it didnt work.

I have always got better speed using my phone for tethering as compared to using a data card. The data card I use is capable of 21mbps and I still get better throughput on my mobile phone and I have no idea why. I use a Samsung galaxy note.

As far as making your isp believe that you are using a mobile phone and not a data card its not really worth spending the time and energy as its going to take a lot of work and you would need professional help. I know how it could be done but I have no idea how to actually do it. There are still some things that you would have to deal with even after setting everything up because if you make your ISP believe you are using a mobile browser then the websites you open would push in the mobile version at your browser n matter what you are using at your end. You would be hitting the desktop version button on every page and thats if there is one on the websites you visit. This is just one of the problems and there would be many that I do not have a solution to.

My preference would be to pay up the extra money

It does not make sense unless the mobile plans are unlimited which they are not. I dont understand why the service provider is bothered how people use the data as it is limited and they have paid for it.

Does Reliance also have a plan which you can only use while wearing a red underwear?

I am sure superman would be allowed to use that plan all the time but he would have to move to India from Newyork to be able to use Reliance 3g

    Reliance sucks

Once you pay up for certain amount of data then it is none of Reliance's business how you use it, with data card or mobile phone.

I would take the red underwear plan if it was unlimited and provided 20mbps speed for 500rs a month I wont mind Reliance staff coming to check the color of the underwear I am wearing as long as the connection works

    Mere fast connection ka raaz
    Laal chaddi pehni hai aaj!

    Rhymes, doesnt it?

Some of the threads on this forum are just "class" I cant stop laughing. There is no need to watch commedy shows.

    LOLing @ red underwear

I do agree that it is none of Reliance's business once you have paid for certain amount of data. Had it been unlimited then it would make a little sense to have such a restriction in place.

Members on this forum are class! The things you guys come out with are too funny!

Back to the topic, generally 3G plans don't work when the sim is inserted inside a dongle, but its worth a try!

Humour apart - has anybody fiddled with 3G data card settings..?

3G sims work fine on unlocked data cards - have tried idea, Aircel, Airtel, Vodafone.
The problem as mentioned before is the bandwidth management at telco side - whenever they get a "data card device identifier", they do a customer id/plan check and assign them a bandwidth rule. Now since the sim is not a 3G data card one, the red flag goes up.

In some circles (East India/NE India) - they do not check much.
But my friend (in MP) got a call from Reliance for using the Rs 123 plan on a data card.

Technically - the browser thing is a non-issue, as using 'Phone as a modem is allowed'.
The problem is at 2 ends -
    1. APN settings for the data card.
    2. Forwarding a mobile identifier for the data card.

    Will experiment on this.
