The word 'guide' in this title is a misnomer. I realized it later after posting.

This is not a guide or tutorial - it is more a document that explains the concepts. At the end of the document, there is just an example.

I received many posts and PMs after this thread on how to PF in their router. To all those people, I sincerely request, please visit PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall.

I wrote this document because many people still struggle to port forward. This is because underlying principles are not understood. My aim was make these principles understood.

    Exclamation Help!!

I use an MTNL broad band connection with 2 Mb/s unlimited download.
From what i could gather from MNTL's info page on its site i use UTStarcom UT-300R2 modem.
Now the information on portforward.com for this specific router does not match whats on 192.168.1.1

    Question:
1.How do i set up a Static IP address and do i need one ?
2.Do i need a static IP address for setting up port forwarding for my p2p ?
3.How do i set up port forwarding for Vuze ?

I've been trying to work this thing out for 3 whole days now, with very little sleep. Its really frustrating. Please help.
And if you could elaborate with some visual help that would be worth a lot more.Thank you.

How do u connect to the internet? Do u dial out the connection by yourself or do u switch on the modem and let the modem dial out the connection?

I switch the modem on well its connected to a electric power socket which i turn on and use away.
Funny,My basic concern was why my p2p in this case Vuze got a very low download speed.I know it depends heavily on seeders but the health of the torrent, the smiley was always Yellow (mediocre:not good not bad)
I did everything i could find on this forum and on other sites like portforward.com to make things right.
I clicked on the option box for UPnP and disabled it under options on Vuze. Now I have a green smiley.

    Somehow everything worked out.
But i have some questions on MTNL and p2p softwares like the one I'm using Vuze.

When I meant "static ip address", I meant the address that you assign manually to your PC in TCP/IP properties (Ref: How to set TCP/IP settings).

This TCP/IP address can now be forwarded - either in Virtual Server or in NAT/DMZ.

To put the ip address in DMZ, click on the NAT/DMZ option. It will ask for IP address of the computer that will be put in DMZ. Enter the address. Click on 'Apply'. Do not forget to "Save and Reboot".

Could you not get help in other threads started/visited by you on same subject ?

short sms type messages will not get proper response here.
    Say clearly what you want/need
    What you tried
    and where you are stuck.
Give details of modem applications etc.

of course it is!for your modem i think you have to use the modem in DMZ mode but this will mean all net traffic will be coming directly to your PC on all ports so install a good firewall before doing this.

First of all I'll provide a few details and then explain the problem.

    Internet: BSNL Broadband
    Plan: Home 1350 UL
    Bandwidth: 512 kbps
Modem: Nokia Siemens Residential Router 1600

The problem: Earlier I used a Type 1 modem and although I downloaded movies using Bit Torrent, I never bothered to learn much about torrents as I was getting a dl speed of 50-70 KBps. However, recently I switched to this new modem because I need wireless connection for my laptop. Since then I've been facing a dl speed problem.

--Firstly, I get this warning on U/Bit Torrent: Not Connectable. A Firewall/Router is limiting your network traffic. You need to open up a port. Sometimes, the light is green, sometimes it's yellow, and sometimes it's red.

--Secondly, the green/yellow/red lights don't determine the speed. The speed is its usual self under green/yellow/red lights. And it becomes very low even under green light.

--Thirdly, I made sure that this not happening for a particular torrent. So, I'm getting a 50-70 KBps speed on one torrent and 5-6 KBps speed on another(with 25-30 seeds). I have no clue as to why the speed is differing.

--Fourthly, I have already read a number of guides for port forwarding, but they usually explain it for different modems. I am completely lost and totally beat.

--Fifthly, I've searched the internet for the modem I'm using(Nokia Siemens Residential Router 1600) and came up with nothing. I hope I'm stating the model name correctly because that's what it says on the box. I've tried a number of forums and most of them talk about Nokia Siemens C 2110.

--Lastly, I'm really confused and need help. I'll be obliged if someone can point me in the right direction. Thank you.
