Thumbs up Torrents and Port Forwarding Guide

Here is a guide than explains the principles on Port Forwarding. The guide contains an example of how to port forward using the popular UT-300R2U router provided by BSNL.

p/s. Let me clarify this a bit. This thread is not about - how to port forward with a specific modem although this guide gives the example of UT300R2U.

Rather this guide is to explain the concepts.

Thanks. This guide was already posted earlier in the BSNL forum. I made a copy here.

    Hi
Am new to BB.... Got the connection few months back
Am using Home 500C. Modem: UT-300R2U
The screen that appears to me (when i logged on to 192.168.1.1) is different from the one appears in the attached document. There is no "Virtual Server" tab or link in the "Advanced Setup" link....

    Please guide me.

You are having the same router but with different firmware. BSNL has disabled "Virtual server" option in this firmware.

    You can do the following:

    a) Configure modem in bridge mode. All ports will be forwarded.
    OR
    b) You can set static TCP/IP settings on your computer and then put this IP address in the DMZ.

Well... Hmmm... How to configure modem in bridge mode... Is that safe to have all the ports forwarded.?!?!?

In both the above options, all ports are forwarded. It is not safe to forward ports but you can prevent mishaps by having a good firewall such as Peer Guardian. Also have a good AV software that is properly updated.

Really, really great guide. But with things this complicated, and if you're a newbie, I'd suggest you talk to professionals.

First you must be able to access the router. In some cases, router is common for a buliding and then we cannot access it web configuration.

If virtual server option is not available, use NAT-DMZ option. Or you can switch to bridge mode.

You must be in bridge mode. In bridge mode, there is not need to port forward as all ports are automatically forwarded.

i have already said that i have tried everything possible..which includes
bridge mode, NAT-DMZ option, Virtual Server option
though im not sure about the virtual server option. i dont know what i should have put there..but according to ur guide, it doesnt work..
and as far as bridge mode is concerned..i bridge mode, utorrent worked fine but i have another file shairing software called dc++ in which it still didnt work(which means ports wernt still forwarded).
Any new opinions on how to port forward?

@umang26, tell me your modem make and model number. Also explain the modem setup. Do you have only one modem or modem+wi-fi router, etc.

    Question

Hi im using BSNL Home 500 C plan. im using Bitcomet P2P for downloading movies.Im hardly getting the exceptional download speed as indicated by others. I hardly get in the range of 40-50 KBps (i also dint u'stand wat this KBps and kbps as BSNL is suggesting a speed of 2Mbps)My friend uses the same plan and same torrent. But he gets downloads close to 200KBps through out the day including the congested hours(2-8). Thers a lot of wires jammed up near my system, will relocating the system somewhere provide any solution, it may sound silly buit i just want to know wat should i do to step up the speed.

Ok, I have assigned a static IP but can you please explain what a DMZ is ?

    I have read the guide.
However, I don't know router's address. It's not a private router but a public one.

Public router's cannot be accessed. They are protected just as would protect your home router.
