Lightbulb Solution for multiple machines connecting to same BB connection

This is the same guide that was posted in the BSNL forum.

With the creation of this sub-forum, I have recreated the thread here. Please post all comments on this thread from now on.

Whereas the guide mentions BSNL at many places, it can be substituted for any telephony based broadband ISP's details.

Please note that VPI and VCI values will change for every ISP.

1. Values for BSNL: VPI = 0, VCI = 35
2. Values for MTNL: VPI = 0, VCI = 32

@Other folks, please post VPI/VCI values for your ISP. Many thanks.

For the guide, refer here: http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-b...html#post12663 (Solution for multiple machines connecting to same BB connection)

Gautamsandeep25,

Please explain your network (hardware) setup and connection - starting from the telephone point. Include each and every device such as splitter, modem, switch, router, PC, etc.

Default hi

@just4kix: applied your guide.. and ta da, it started working.. i took some backups before doing your procedure and from then on it was a breeze.

@other users:if you have problems opening the ZIP file, then use winRAR to open the file and then click repair archive. now it will work. repair archive is located in one of the menu's...

You have two options:

a) You can connect to internet via another computer. This is known as Internet connection sharing. The first computer connects to the internet via dialing the modem. The internet connection is shared in the first computer. The second connects to the first computer and connects to the internet via this (first) computer. The disadvantage is that the first computer must always be ON and connected to computer.

b) The second and better way is to configure the modem in PPPoE mode. The guide in this post explains how.

Yes. It is possible for two computers to connect via wireless only. In fact more than two can connect. Just note that the bandwidth will be shared by all computers connected simulataneously.

Read the "Broadband How to" section for my method. Nethack has also posted a link to such software. Both methods work.

You need to setup the modem in PPPoE mode. In this mode, the modem dials and establishes the connection automatically. The (ISP) username and pasword is stored in the modem. The modem connects automatically as soon as it is switched on. In fact modem establishes connection when switched on, whether it is connected to PC or not.

"For Bridging

Default Multiple PCs, PPOE, Firewall, Security & Connection-Control

I have a question to the network experts here.

If we use PPOE mode, then the username/password is stored inside the adsl-modem, and its autodials & establish the connection, irrespective of whether PC is ON or off.

1. I assume in this mode the user has no control over the connection, & hence switching off connection at 8:00AM (for taking benefit of unlimited download) is NOT possible.
Am I right in this assumption?
I am getting confused, since in these forums I am seeing scripts (vbs & autohotkey) which attempts to disconnect connection @ 8:00AM, in ppoe mode.

I have been using till now, modem in ppoe mode itself, but keep un-filled the username/password inside the modem. So I can use the ppoe-dialup from my PC to establish connection. So I have more control over the connect/disconnct process. I have being using taskscheduler, (rasdial batch script) to connect at 2:00AM and disconnect @ 8:00AM, successfully for past 1-2 years.

I have beeing using ppoe-mode this way instead of bridge, since my understanding is that you have a more secure PC connection in this ppoe mode (with firewall) , unlike in bridge mode. So you are more protected against hacks/spams etc, compared to bridge mode.
I want to confirm from experst here, my understanding is correct. Or are there flaws in it?

Now my problem with this approach is that I cannot simultaneously connect more than 1 PC to internet, even though I can connect 4 pcs to my WA3002G4 modem.
Only one PC at a time I can dial to internet.

I understand from this forum that, by using the same PPOE mode & entering username/password, into the modem itslef, I need not dial from my PC, but modem autodials for you. In this way, mutiple PCs can connect to internet. But I am loosing the individual control over connection.

2. Pls tell me if there is a reliable way to switch off connection @ 8:00AM, in this mode.
3. Pls also tell me the inyternal modem firewall (& NAT) is ON at this time. (Not the Windows-XP OS firewall).
Thanks & regards

Your method will work but your assumption that "because in PPPoE, username/pwd is store in modem, and it auto-dials, it is therefor not possible to take benefit of 2AM to 8 AM free download" is wrong.

PPPoE and Autodial has nothing to do with this. All one needs to do is re-establish connection after 2 AM and once again before 8 AM. How this is done is the question:

a) In the Bridge mode, this is done by the 'rasdial' script and scheduling it at 2:05 AM and 7:55 AM
b) In the PPPoE mode, this is done by the 'telnet' script. But the telnet script is not a one liner like the rasdial scipt and hence it requires a wrapper. The wrapper comes in form of executables like TST10 or an EXE creater such as AutoHotkey or Imran's BB utlity. Refer here:
  1. Automatic rebooting of router at 2 AM and 8 AM
  2. Ultimate Night Usage Manager.

a dummies way is to just cut off the power supply (a.k.a. switch off) for the modem and then power it on again.

but to have it automated, just follow the links given by j4k
