Thread: Broadband over power lines starting in US what about India?

US and UK are spending billions into utilizing power lines as broadband lines. Already it has been started in US. Thailand too is mulling over it.
Concept is fairly simple use the transmission lines to simulatneously transfer power. It is a part of power line communications. It might seem fairly simple but a major factor is noise in a line carrying many kilo of volts. Thats why it is limited to just 3 mbps till now and still under development. Many will say why not use the optics or cable? Because in rural and remote areas it is not feasible. problem is more aggrevated in areas with low density of population. So no conventional ISP will try to laid the lines as the price will be exorbitantly high.
Theory is that radio frequency and electric current can be transmitted by same line. First draft of standard for BPL have already been published by IEEE contrary to what wikipedia says.
It must be noted only tranmission lines having vo;ltage upto 7200Volts can be utilized.
I think this concept have immense potential in India where many villages still have to get electricity..

So that mean if I have a broadband connecting using the electricity cables then if there is a power cut I wont get broadban eeither even if I have my own power back up?

In India its just the wireless technology that will succed in the long run as we have almost no planned housing in any of the cities or towns although there are a few exceptions.

You will get the net as broadband is transmitted using radio frequency which independent of electric current.

that will be costly i think wifi is better

When infra is going to be same for electricity and broadband then cost is surely going to be down. Read my thread again. On terrain you are not going to use copper or cables.

Surely, you don't think we are going to use it for Delhi.

we can have big towers for it, but not sure for copper or cables, .. dont advance your "soviet agro plans on Indian terrains, we wont succeed" The best way would be to leave it on people themselves, lets see if they really want Internet or not..
