    Question Which ISP/plan?

    Hello to all of you.

I am new on this forum.

I would like, if possible, you to advise me on which ISP are the best in India.

In a nutshell: I live in Belgium, Europe. My parents have built a house in the suburb of Pudhucherry (i.e., Tamil Nadu). This house is divided in two parts: a house (which will be ours) and a school.

Therefore the need for a good internet connection. Since I don't know a thing about Indian ISPs, I would like, if possible some help.

Also: the house being in the suburbs, there is no landline installed yet.

In Belgium, "broadband" is not like yours: I have 12 mbps down and 1mbps up (yes, you read me correctly) and 75 Gbytes of quota/month. My download speed on torrents or newsgroups is of approximatively 1,3 Mb/s. Yes, I'm lucky.

That's why I am a little bit confused with the different plans/ISPs in India. Could you help me out?

(I will be in India in July, so that's not an emergency)

    Thanking you,

    Sigmund

P.S.: The price is not really a problem, but shouldn't be too expensive either. 1000 Rs/month max, I'd say
    P.S.²: Here's what I have home:

The BSNL is best in India, you can try two three plans:

    1. Home 500 c - Upto 2 Mbps speed , 1.5 GB limit per month and has night 2 - 8 a.m. Unlimited - Rs. 550/month including 175 free calls/month.

    2
. Home UL 750 - Speed 256 Kbps - Unlimited - Free calls as per existing plan. - Rs. 750

    3. Home UL 1350 -- Speed 512 Kbps - Unlimited -
Free calls as per existing plan. - Rs. 1350

When you look for an internet connection, there are many things you should care about. First will be the feasibility. In my opinion Airtel is the best ISP in India. But they do not have service everywhere. Please check at your place about feasibility of an Airtel connection. After Airtel, there are a no of ISPs which have local services. But I feel BSNL will succeed Airtel. They have a very good reach and plans are also cheap. You can choose UL 750 256 Kbps at Rs.750 per month. If you do not need an unlimited connection, you can choose Home 500, 500 C and 500 C+. They have download limit up to 2.5 GB and comes at a cost of Rs. 500 per month.

Since you may not need a land line for making calls, you can select combo plans where the telephone rent is zero. Is the school in anyways related to you ? If yes, you can get a BSNL connection for eductional institutions at a very good rate.

You can find all available plans and tariff by BSNL here

There's a lot in info here.

I'll take the time to analyze the data and come back for more questions.

    Thanks!

P.S.: the school would be an evening school for children sponsored in Europe. A possibility of unlimited/cheap phone calls/VOIP to Europe would be great \o/

    Nope!

I'm not going to live in India 12 months a year, more likely one or two months/year.

Still, the school needs the internet connection.

The place where the house is built is in Thengaitthitu (I'm told it means the "coconut village" in Tamil), South of downtown Pondicherry! That would be here:

Thank you meetdilip, I'm going to check it out!

For making almost free calls to land lines to Belgium and a lot of other European countries you can try : voipbuster.com
You just need to put in a few dollars and you get 180 days free unlimited calls to the countries listen on their site... Remember that calling to mobile phones would still cost you normal voip rates.

Ive been using them for some time now and havent experienced any issues. I have never had a call dropped in the middle of a conversation.

    Well thanks for the advice!

The only problem is that the computer needs to be switched on to call and/or receive calls. But well I guess I still can use a regular phone/landline along this software.

Problem is, I'm planning to install an ubuntu distrib' on the machines there, possibly edubuntu. This way I won't have to worry about viruses and antiviruses (). But I see there's a website-based version of the software, so that's cool.

    Thanks!

You dont need to keep your computer turned on if you have a sip device.
I use a Nokia E-71 and I have an application installed on it called Fring which enables me to use Voipbuster using the sip option... I log in using wifi from the phone so dont need to have your computer on all the time.
