    Default Looking for a new broadband connection in Chennai

    Hi guys,

    I recently shifted to Vettuvannkeni on ECR from Thiruvanmiyur and am looking for a broadband connection. I was a BSNL customer for last 4 years and they don't have services here in Vettuvannkeni as they have no lines infrastructure and not ready to invest in it.

    Can you guys suggest any other BB services that are available her?

    To be honest if Bsnl is not available then other service providers availability too is very unlikely but it would still be worth a try giving them a call.

    If Bsnl EVDO network is available then that could be a very good option if you are not into gaming and all. It is only Rs750 per month for unlimited usage with a speed upto 3.1mbps which is a very good price.

    For local availability it is best to ask people who live around there.

    What about reliance and bsnl wimax. Are they worth it? And would any other cable provider be available?

    You could try Airtel, You Broadband, Tikona or Spectranet. Spectranet is cable broadband.

    Thats the problem. Its hard to say what is available and what is not. You would be better off asking locals over there. If you are not doing anything commercial and are not worried about higher latency then BSNL EVDO fits the bill in my opinion.

    BSNL wimax is not bad either but it is probabbly going to cost a lot more. Reliance I doubt if it would be available if even Bsnl land lines are not available in the area. If it is a new establishment then may be private operators may have layed their cables you really need to check with Reliance and Airtel and others.

    I can spend around 3k a month for an unlimited connection....

    None of the operators have infrastructure here. BSNL have lines but they are not maintained and they are not ready to spend any further. I have to wait and see for tikona or have to go with BSNL evdo or wimax.

    What is the bandwidth with EVDO?

    If your monthly budget is Rs3000, then you can go for Tikona a 4Mbps for Rs2600.

    Before you get Tikona please get a demo at your place and also read reviews on the net and on our forum. Doesn't look like the best option to me atleast. May be working well for some people but we get a lot of negative feedback on this forum.

    Just seen on the Tikona site that you get a 4Mbps connection for Rs4499 for 3 months and no GB restrictions. Like OneManArmy has mentoned about getting a demo they are offering something similar to that where it says test speed then pay, but do clarify with Tikona, as you dont want to be stuck with them and not get the speeds which are mentioned.

    Tikona, doesn't sound too good, especially with not having good reviews. Maha2804 if I was you I would ask Tikona to give all details of the offer, and like Admin said get a demo done first before applying for the connection.

    Have you asked around locally of what others are using?

    LOL @ Tikona dream. I have always advised members here to check reviews of an ISP before you part with your money. This guy obviously gave into the greed of discounts by paying advance rental. I would never advise that to any one.

    @Tikona

    I know you check our forum every day and I would request you to please follow the link above and sort out this guys refund problem please. Hes actually listed a few dozen complaint numbers. Do it asap or I go and tell him in that post that he can sue your company's arse for all you are worth ha ha ha..

    Honestly I am going to follow up on this. This is absolutely pathetic!

    That is well out of order. Edge I saw your comment there. Good advise and I hope that guy actually follows it and get a few grands for the trouble he has gone through.

    @Admin
    I read in one your threads that you applied for Tikona but you never heard back from them I wonder why did you apply in the first place?

    Well there seems to be a lot of opposition for tikona. But it seems that maybe the only option I may have. I have booked for a demo they haven't responded in days about that. If there is no other option I might hv to settle for data card.

    Once you get a demo, and everything turns out to be fine, then I suppose there is no harm in getting Tikona, but I would not recommend getting more than months plan in advance, just incase there are issues regarding speed or customer support, then your money will be going to waste.

    I suppose if this doesnt work out then datacard will be the only option, but there are good deals and speeds on data cards too.

    Are there data cards with good speeds as broad band and bandwidth?

    You can choose from Airtel or Vodafone, both have good speeds in Chennai. But again I would also insist on you asking the people living around you to what they are using and the speeds they are getting because speeds and coverage vary from place to place.

    I would say you go for Airtel 3G, they are a bit costly but provide good speeds.
