    Hello all,

    Connection Details

I have been using BSNL EVDO for the last 1.5 years with mixed experience. It is good nowadays and the service finally works in rural areas at CDMA 1x (144kbps or actual file download speed 14-15kBps. Speeds in bigger cities depending on spotty coverage 20kBps-100kBps).

I had been waiting for BSNL 3G to be rolled out and finally got my prepaid sim converted to 3G in April beginning. It took about 2-3 weeks more for BSNL to activate Hello all,

Filed Download Speed: 150-200 kBps (all times of day with good signal) w/ USB connection to Laptop.
Service: Blackberry 3G Unlimited Internet Service
    Device: Blackberry Bold 9000

I had been waiting for BSNL 3G to be rolled out and finally got my prepaid sim converted to 3G in April at Amenity block Race Course Road, Bangalore. It took about 2-3 weeks more for BSNL to roll out the 3G Blackberry Services and that too only with post paid.

    3G Blackberry finally arrives.

It took BSNL one week almost to get the prepaid to post paid conversion and activate the Blackberry Internet services due to the recent BSNL Workers strike and public holidays.

Initially the service was very spotty and blackberry services would go down regularly for up to a day at a time. The speed was also limited to 144 kBps (15kBps file download).

The blackberry works as a modem for laptop very easily with usb cable and software provided by RIM Blackberry Software.

Last week, I went back to the BSNL office and enuired with the very helpful CSC and Blackberry Support agent. He checked as to why the speeds were so slow. After speaking to thier back end technicians who provisioned a better speed (2mbps as he informed me), The connections is working better than my Airtel Broadband line at home!!!

The beautiful thing is that 3G Blackberry Service seems to be available not only in big cities of Karnataka but also Tier 2 cities. I have tried in Hassan, Chikmagalur, Mysore, Mangalore apart from Bangalore. In certain cases, the speed in the smaller cities was better than Bangalore. Assuming not many small town people are using 3G services like Bangalore.

I have seen file download speeds up to 240kBps in bursts!! 120-150kBps consistently. Its great in most areas although the signals are not as good as 3G in basements and certain buildings with thick walls. The autoswitching 2G/3G on the device ensures that call drops are not as bad but data rates are very bad on the EDGE network.

The service is great value for money considering Rural deployment. I would strongly suggest this to anyone else as long as they have some time to spend at the BSNL Office. Blackberry Services and that too only with post paid.

Hey @bhat_rag. I have used the connection mostly in the centre of town including Brigade road, mg road, airport road, richmond town, cunningham road, frazer town, btm layout etc with good speed when signal is full.

I cannot comment on the data card speeds as I was led to believe that the provisioning for the blackberry is slightly different. I am yet to try my sim in a 3g enabled phone.

Rs. 25l00 seems to be quite economical for a data card. It would be worthwhile to visit a csc or a franchisee to see if they have a demo card / connection available.

I would also enquire about the rental option as they have with EVDO before purchasing the card.

    Hey @Bhat_rag,

I agree that the rental option of Rs. 200 is high considering that they take a Rs. 1000 deposit as well. However, I was iffy about the EVDO initially cause they were charging Rs. 550 pm for unlimited. Therefore, I took the rental option at first for two months and then when i was happy with the service, purchased the card outright. The phone number did change when i purchased the card and surrendered the rental but there were no voice calls any way so i didn bother. I got the entire deposit back after 60 days.

Way i saw it was that if the service was not good, i would have gotten stuck with the Rs. 3500 EVDO card that would have been a brick if the service was bad.

You should try a demo in your area (or the place you would use it most, like ur house / work) before purchasing so good luck with that.

Let me know how it works out for you.

    Hi josephrmathias,

thank you for the real good review abt BSNL 3G, i did take a BSNL 3G prepaid trail connection and is really impressed with the connection speed. Unlimited data plan on 3G is still an expensive affair.

I do have a Blackberry bold with me that I was using in Canada and it is unlocked.

Planning to go to a BSNL office this weekend and get it changed.

It is just 898 for a prepaid. So do you think the speed will vary between a prepaid and post paid connection, the reason I was asking is you changed from Pre-paid to post paid.

If I am satisfied will change it later to post paid .

@banjara99 - How did the trial work out for you. I dont think that you will get much help on the prepaid connection. I am on postpaid and made 4-5 visits before i got the speed up to the levels i get nowadays. 200kBps downloads sometimes. Am really impressed.

Default Sudden Reduction in Speed with BSNL 3G data-card

    Hi Guys,

I am using BSNL 3G data card for broadband from the past 1 month.
From yesterday, am observing the speeds are reducing drastically. Am just getting 800-1200 Kbps or 0.8-1.2 Mbps hardly.
Is anybody else too experiencing the same.........? If yes please reply.

Do you know why is this happening? Is there any usage or speed capping in this BSNL unlimited scheme for 3G.....?

Or is it a network problem with some network device down?
If anyone has any idea about this pls reply to mohammedbit@gmail.com

    Thanks,
    Mohammed P.

Could you please post the BSNL 3G settings from your mobile ? Which BB are you using ?
I am planning to switch from vodafone to BSNL for Unlimited blackberry 3G service.
I want to use it with laptop as well. Do i need to buy BSNL 3G plan ? seprately for browsing and download on laptop ???
Bcoz on BSNL Website. It clearely says that *Unlimited Internet Browsing-access limited to Blackberry smart phones.

Could you please clear it up lil bit how have you setup your BOLD and all settings ?

    Thanx.

    Default misleading info

The BSNL has only a Rs991 prepaid and a corresponding postpaid with an amount which would total to the same when you add the Servicre taxes plans for 3G blackberry unlimited.

It is truely unlimited when I browse from my cell, which I can get it in Vodafone for 400Rs on 2g per month.

when I tried to use this plan to connect to from my laptop, it deducted amount from my main account. its a very disappointing thing to have this.
when I called up CC , i didn't get a clear answer from anyone. "they always speak in Hindi when I select English As my preferred language, even if I ask them to speak in english, they will always speak in Hindi...
I think they were taught to speak English in Hindi....
... i still doubt if there is a plan ever existed/ some one from tech support did any favourism offer for getting the unlimited data.. I am posting this inorder to not to have another guy misled by this first thread.

Thanx for the heads up bushairkp.
I thought so the same. you need to setup apn(bsnlnet) in TCP/IP. and when you set the apn. it is bound to happen that.
Thats why i asked the OP. how he did it with blackberry dektop manager ?
anyway. i have already recharged my prepaid with 991 yesterday. and BIS service is still not activate on my number.
gosh !! their BB customer care sux as well. they have been telling that it would take some time.
In short tethering will not work with BIS right ?? you need to purchase seprate Data plan to use with LAPTOP. am i right ??

Ok. My BIS service got actviated today morning.
You will not able to use tethering option. I tried 4 different Tethering software for Blackberry. All ask for Direct TCP connection which is bsnlnet(APN).
So whenever i use to make connection via APN . My balance get deducted.
    So BIS tethering wont work.
I dont know how come OP can use it ? If he is active on the forum. could you please clarify ??
    Thanx.

This information is not misleading . I am also getting unlimited browsing in by laptop without any cost when i used blackberry as modem .
According to bsnl blackberry support team they allowed this for only post-paid 999 plan. Not for pre-paid 991 voucher.
