Bsnl data card lw272 configuration on Ubuntu 10.04

Hi folks
Here is a better way to configure hi speed 3g bsnl data card model lw272 (supplied by teracom).

(i) Extract PCL_COMNLG from its tar.gz (provided in the datacard) to your favourite folder say Desktop. (In 10.04 u may not able to see this file in the data card as has been detected as modem). So make it a storage device or some how get the tar.gz file. I took it during my installation in windows)

(ii) Use synaptic to download these small files.

(i) wvdial

(ii) libxplc

(iii) pppdcapiplugin

( There is no need for tweaking with usb switch mode)

(iii) In Terminal type the following

cd Desktop
cd PCL_COMNLG
sudo sh install.sh

You can now see the installation and you will get a separate pop up program dialogue box where you can give your user name password and right Apn (bsnlnet for south). Wait for the signal and connect.

Now the installation do not stop (as it is old 9.04 shell may be some tweaking has to be done in the shell file --- we don't need that for our purpose). Force stop the installation by pressing control c. Then go to /opt/Join Air and double click on executable file Join_Air. Now Wait for the signal and connect.

If you restart your system in the appplications > internet > join air
would have vanished. Do not bother. Go to System > Preferences > Main Menu. Click on the internet tab left side. On the right press New item.
In the pop up create launcher give Join air for name and for command
/bin/Join_Air. Close and now you can see join air in appplications > internet . Click and wait for signal and connect.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx and was attempting to configure BSNL 3G USB data card LW 272. I am a new user but ur procedure was fairly simple and straightforward. However, during the execution of the procedure, i did not get any pop up box and hence I am unable to connect to the Internet. The snapshot of the terminal window is below.

I tried your method on linux mint 9 .The installation showed a few errors including "not found device onda or something'. May be because i did not connect the device while the installation was going on . There were no pop windows. Any way, Join_Air option was there under the menu 'internet'. But clicking it did not work.

But then i noticed that the network manager recognised the device as 'gsm network device'. I clicked on the icon and it took me to configure the network. After choosing the country as 'india' and the service provider as 'bsnl', it asked for the service plan and apn. The two default plans (plan a and plan b) for south india did not have the correct apn. There was another option in the end to enter the plan manualy. I chose this and entered apn as 'bsnlnet'. It worked smoothly. I don't use Join_Air for starting the connection but use the network manager.

This should work for Ubuntu 10.04 also as mint 9 is based on it. I have installed mint in a pendrive and boot from there. So this should work in any machine. The only problem is that i am not able to monitor how much is the download - upload traffic.Thank you very much for the post

hi, i am using bsnl 3g modem model LW272 with a 2g sim in it, trying on ubuntu 9.10, the setup went fine and i can see the JoinAir icon on internet tab, but on starting it, the status displays only "initialising...." and nothing happens next. I can see that the images on the display that refer "Device is not connected" , "No (U) SIM" and all that stuff, eventhough the modem was connected in the usb port. and while installing i got the following error in the root terminal :

and it keeps on repeating again and again, it cant be a problem of malfunction of modem as i can access mmc cards using the modem (a slot inbuilt in it for this purpose), what i think now is that the installation is missing something, but what i cant figure it out . Seeking suggestions...

i would be a happy man for this to happen, but thats also not working for me, any ideas, how to make possible atleast this? I am using ubuntu 9.10 .
