Exclamation 3G speed using cellphone as modem vs datacard

    Hello,

I learned today from BSNL 3G customer care (on phone) that when using a 3G enabled cellpone (SE W995) as modem, internet connection speed will be about 384 Kbps. Also, I was told that the 3G datacards are the way to go if one needs internet connection with speed about 3.6 Mbps. This came as a big surprise to me, as I always thought cellphone modem vs datacard did not have any difference for internet access in terms of speed when used with 3G service.

Has any one got more authentic inputs on this point or have practical experience?

    Regards,
    cjrao.

I use Mcromax H360 handset and it connects as a modem with full HSDPA speeds (i.e. average 1 mbps+)

The Maximum theoretical speed is 3.6 mbps. But when you factor in the wireless connectivity issues the speed is not stable and increases and decreases over time. But on an average, I get 1 mbps+ speeds.

on an avg on bsnl 3g UL plan we r getting 300kbps on torrents on unlocked idea 3g data card tht practically means 300 X 8=2.4mbps.....but yes the speed depends upon the strength of the signal as well as the capablity of the network to handle 3g....in our case we tested 3g under various areas n only two towers were capable of handling 3g rest all were same on 2g ....also if u r using a 3g router tht helps to aviod the frequent disconnections tht r present by auto connecting.......

U need to use Hsdpa hand sets..my speed varies from 5kbps to 195kbps i.e 195*8 = 1.56 mbps..depends on signal strength too ..it wont remain constant...like cable connection s....

    ^^^
bro nothing tht ke there much difference but still a cell'phone 's modem is still operable on battery (even if u connect it to power the modem gets power thru battery only)whhich u connect to pc will affect the life of battery.....so 3g usb modem on any day will be better if u r connected to net for more than 4-5 hrs a day...
as for speeds we tested the bsnl 3g on n96....while the phone supported 3g but wasnt reaching above 50 Kbps on net means 50 X 8=400 kbps...whn we took this matter we found tht n96 was not a HSPDA supported set so the speed was restricted to 384kbps .....
we also tested the net speeds on a 3.6Mbps usb modem with a 7.2 Mbps usb modem ....the speed was no different ..it was same on both the modems..though the fact tht 7.2 mbps modem is a future proof modem but for now the 3.6 is more than enough to suffice the speeds.....
well u can imagine the 3g came to INDIA more than a decade after it was launched in the international circuits so u can imagine how long it will take to jump from 3g to 3.5 g.....still for now the 3.6 mbps modem shud suffice the needs of everyone.....

if u guys want we can post the speedtest results ....

well u r right u r cellphone is 3g not 3.5 g which is called hsdpa, hsdpa supports
speed of 3.6 to 7.2 mbps. u can use u r cellphone as a modem as it will not
heat up or disconnect like other data cards
