Thread: 3G coverage map?

I'm thinking about living temporarily in India, hopefully in a rural area.

Where can I find 3G coverage maps for BSNL and other providers? I went to their website but couldn't find anything.

You have to specify the nearest town/city.

Find 3G coverage in your Area

Here is a trick (if I can call it) to find out if 3G network exists in your or not. Get your 3G handset and visit the Network menu BSNL 3G network in Hyderabad(Generally this will be in Settings – Connectivity). Select UMTS (or 3G, as it appears) as the network mode and select Manual under the Operator selection.

Wait for your mobile to search for any available UMTS signals.

As the figure shows, I have CellOne 3G (in fact 3.5G) signal in my area. If you don’t get any resultant network, it simply means that your area is not covered under the 3G network, currently.

Note: There is no signal indication above the 3.5G in the figure because I tested it with Airtel Sim using which I will not have access to BSNL CellOne’s network.

By the way, Airtel has started selling iPhone 3GS in India. If you can some how unlock the phone, the speed of that device (browsing speed, that is) combined with the BSNL 3.5G network will be unbelievable. You will almost throw away your Tata Photons’ and Reliance Net connect devices.

Yeah I saw that result on Google. I'm not in India right now so I can't test out a handset. That's why I need a map of some sort.

Give specific state or town to narrow down the search.

Presently the following service providers are offering 3G services, either HSDPA (GSM 3G) or EVDO (CDMA 3G)

BSNL : HSDPA : In limited cities
BSNL : EVDO : In a large number of cities and towns
Reliance : EVDO : In about 60+ locations
TATA : EVDO : In about 60+ locations
MTS : EVDO : In about 50+ locations

You need to be more specific on the location to get availability status

How about Rishikesh in Uttarakhand?

BSNL EVDO service is available in Rishikesh

whenever you come to India,you can also go for private telecome which provides 3g service like airtel,reliance,tata etc.

But if you specifically wanted to go for bsnl then,You can get bsnl 3g coverage almost every where, all you have to do is to purchase a 3g sim.

It's just...what if I'm 1km outside of Rishikesh. Is there 3g? How about 2km away from Rishikesh, but on a hill with direct views of Rishikesh?

In the US I'm used to country-wide coverage maps. In India I guess there aren't maps like this. You just have to go there, turn on your phone and see if you're getting 3g service.

Is 3G available in smaller Uttarakhand towns like Nainital and Almora?

Its available in Haldwani. Not sure about Nainital or Almora
