Default Need help in buying a router

I plan to purchase a BSNL 3G sim card and go for the killer unlimited 4200 rupee plan for 6 months, hopefully with a 7.2 Mbps. I need help for choosing a router.

I have a desktop and a laptop at home. So, if I buy the USB device, I can support empower only one device unless I network them and keep one system on all the time.

There are portable routers which accept this USB modem device and then give me a wifi/ ethernet route. But this would mean I have to buy 2 devices and unnecessary cost!

So, in short, I'm looking for a portable device which accepts the sim card directly, has ethernet ports, wi fi and has a rechargeable battery of sorts (which could be USB or directly powered from the mains)- so that I can enjoy the benefits of all the devices and use it on the move as well.

    Linksys WRT54G3G, Huwaei 585, Netgear 3300

These 3 devices come close to my requirements but fall short on one or another count. Does anyone know an all in one device like this?

Sim card slot+ ethernet port+ wifi+ battery (gives mobility) in a small, sleek, device?

Do let me know. Thanks for your attention.
    Vyasa.

    Default HUAWEI E960, 11G, 54MBPS speed/54Meter Range with 1 3G/2G SIM card slot

I have been surveying the routers from past couple of weeks. I found the below mentioned Router technically quite stable when downloaded at high speeds continuously.

    HUAWEI E960, 11G, 54MBPS speed/54Meter Range with 1 3G/2G SIM card slot,price Rs.5400.

This model allows you share the same 3 G connection with multiple users without the requirement of 3G USB modem.

I have been able to negotiate at the price of Rs 4885 with bill and 1 Year warranty. I have ordered 5 routers from outside the country. If you want , you can contact me.

Thanks Sameer, for your prompt response! I did look up the device that you suggested and it seems almost perfect. I have only the size to complain about and since it is a USB charger, I think portability is still doable.

I did check out a couple of other devices by Huwaei- The R201 by Vodafone and E585 by 3. Both are much smaller (almost by a factor of 5 times in terms of volume) and weigh less than 100g! The flipside is that it does not have an ethernet port, but I can still connect to a PC via the USB which also charges the device. Both come with batteries of their own. I'm yet to find out if they're crackable. They're sold along with phone connections in the UK.

I don't think either devices support the futuristic 802.11n which is a shame. I' ve asked a friend of mine who works in Huwaei for more details. I hope he gives me more details on all 3 products. I have no idea what to expect for prices for the other 2 products I mentioned. I'll take a decision once I get more details about the other 2 products. Sub 5k is a good proposition indeed.

    Default HUAWEI E960, 11G, 54MBPS speed/54Meter Range with 1 3G/2G SIM card slot

    Hi Vyasa,

E960 Router also has a separate charger to be plugged into wall outlet. So that it can act as a gateway and the same SIM 3G connection by other users as well. The challenge with the other 2models which you referred to is that its battery powered , but in the UMTS mode HSPDA consumes lot of power and battery wont last for long. Also those models have limited range for wireless networks. These devices can be compared to Cellphone with 3G compatibility and being shared over a bluetooth with EDR + capability. Even that kind of cell would be around 5 to 6 K.

With all these considerations, I opted for E960. The only better model which I found was E 970b, but its not available in India.

As you mentioned you have a friend in Huawei, I am sure he can get us a better price and also check for the Huawei UMG 1831 21Mbps modem.

    Hi Sameer

When are you getting these routers.
I may be interested in getting one, as i am in the same scenario, i want to run multiple pcs and wireless devices at home and i am looking for a good router. I don't want to go for a router and a usb modem both for now.

    Huawei E960 Gateway Specifications

    · UMTS/HSDPA 2100MHz

    · GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz

    · Windows®2000, XP & Vista Operating systems

    · One USB interface, multiplex for power supply and USB interface

    · 384Kbps uplink, 7.2Mbps downlink

    · SMS capable

    · Combines WiFi and 4 ports Ethernet gateway in one device

    · Built-in WCDMA and WLAN high gain antenna, which supports receiving diversity and equalizer

The only worry part is the upload speed which is 384 kbps even though download is 7.2 MBPS. This is the one worry as to why the up link speed is so low.

Let me know when you are getting these.

    Regards
    Dushie

I am searching it locally buddy. I have already sent a mail to taiwan sales department of this company.

I hope I will find locally. Let me know if anybody finds it at here because price is also too high if we convert in INR and I also do not know that price is included with transportation charges or not.

It needs to be unlocked. Any where I have seen that it only works with bigpond and it can be unlocked. I do not remember where I have seen guide to unlock or on ebay I may have seen unlocked router.

    Sorry guys,,,
No luck. I was looking around about sim router in india but I could not find at anywhere in india. We can buy it only from ebay or by importing it from company which may lead costly to import and something happened to router It has to be export to service center which is not possible. Therefore we are out of luck and I also confirmed from Huawei customer care at delhi. Huawei is not planning to launch this product in india but they are planing to launch this type of device

Perhaps, this device will be costly near abt 8 to 10k like a mobile. Disadvantage of this device is that it has no Ethernet port.
I think huawei is the only company who provides best quality in 3g router. So, I think we will get 3g router when all telecom company will launch their 3g service.

    Thanks for all the inputs!
    @Dilip,
I do like the idea of the wi fi USB dongle but I might add another PC to my home network.
How much does the USB dongle cost? And what is the trade off w.r.t speed? I do realize that I have to keep the system on to create the hotspot, but isn't speed reduced by routing it through a hotspot and a software?

I think a wifi dongle comes for Rs. 500 something. Please check with the local dealer.

I have not used Connectify. But I have heard good reviews about. Normally the speed depends on signal strength. If you are very much in range, I think you will get good speeds. Please note that Connectify works only on Windows 7 PC.

Do you have any idea of it's battery life? I am planning to buy this one, so I wanted to know if it is any good.....
The dealer in Hyderabad is quoting Rs.4600 (free home delivery in city) and this is marginally cheaper and much faster than the eBay prices....

    @all others
Did any of you get any price details of the other routers?

I got some info from my friends in China. They did look around for 3G sim routers. It seems they cannot buy it off the market as all of those are outdated (due to the speeds involved). But they are available in some random shops which are not trustworthy and open to a bargain- like one of the chor bazaars in India. I ditched my efforts. My friends work in Huawei and it seems there is no way they do a company to customer sale and that too with my request for a cracked product, I can kiss it goodbye.

I was just about to concede defeat in my search for a direct router when I stumbled upon this 2 days back.

Vodafone has released R201 this in India few days back. I hope it is not bundled with the sim. I hope it is useable on other sims. Can anyone confirm this??

    Default Olive Nexus V R-9

I found this option when I was researching the options of 3G portable routers to work with my BSNL 3G USB modem.

Can't post the link as I'm new to this site.

Anyone has an idea of its quality and compatibility? Price is attractive at just Rs.2990.

    Would appreciate a response.
