Thread: Huawei UMG 1831 stopped working!

Hi everyone,
this has come as a shock for me. such a trusted modem and going bad like this i purchased it a few months back and it was doing fine. then suddenly today when i plugged it for using the net it didnt come to life!! no green light, no blue light....the computer didnt even know that i had connected something on its usb port.

i know sometimes the sim doesnt get registered and it remains blinking 'green'...but this time it is not even being detected by the computer! and no theres no problem of overheating...checked that.

the bigger issue now is that the ebay seller has not been fair and is not giving me warranty (though am still covered under warranty!). the huawei company is telling me that this modem is not sold in India by them and so no warranty claims would be honored! so am stuck....

i know umg 1831 is the best one but becuase of this bad experience i am planning to buy Huawei K4505...is this a correct choice?

UMG 1831 normally works for every one with out serious problem.

Most ebay data card selling comapnies import thro grey market (also called smuggling) locked cards @ cheaper price in bulk from Europe (not original manufacturer in Taiwan/china),unlock it and sell thro net.

They can not even give prper VAT bill and sell thro normal wholesale/retail channel.

since it is a cheap item (less tha rs 3000),some people take a risk and buy. .

Huawei K4505 is also not officially sold by Huawei.(Huawei sells only in bulk to Broad band service provider.They mostly lock it/subsdise the price and bundle with data packs subscription)

K4505 gets hotter when compared to UMG 1831.

you are not sure your old luck will follow in K4505 also. (Ebay/Online service guarantee not worth the paper/bytes it is written on)

You can buy any 7.2 mbps card from Retail stores /Flipkart/letsbuy (not more than Rs 1700 ) or ZTE MF691 -21 mbps card sold by Docomo/reliance etc.
It may have domestic warranty.

thanks for the suggestions. i would have gone for ZTE but i think huaweis are more compatible with mdma. so i would like to go with huawei again but the question remains which is the more reliable of the 2.... 1831 or k4505. both have 21.1 speeds...the only question is which one has more longevity....

also i see that k4505 is being sold currently in India by vodafone (check vodafone.in). so i think it should be a bit more reliable...what u say ?

i have seen your posts and have found them very informative. as you have vast experience with many 3g modems kindly tell me whether after this 1831 incident should i again go for UMG 1831 or should i go for K4505? or is there any other modem like E182e or E357 etc. which should now be considered. (only 21 mbps modems)

Mine too not working.....but mine is "semi-dead"...it works for few minutes and then doesnt work anymore...after few hours it works.....I wasted my money...

sorry to hear that...same thing happened to mine and then after 1 day it completely stopped responding...
