Default Horrible Low Speeds on BSNL 3G

Hi all, I am from Lucknow which comes as UP East circle for most of the providers. I recently purchased a 3G dongle of Huawei which is E303C. Right now I have three 3G SIMs of Idea, aircel and BSNL. My house is in a posh locality of Lucknow and the BSNL exchange is just 2 kms from house. What I have been observing both in PC via dongle and Android phones that Idea on an average clocks around 3 mpbs and with the max of 6 mpbs sometimes, Aircel, though a bit slow still clocks around 2 mpbs on an average. These are the speeds on PC via dongle. On Androids, they tend to run half of this speed...any reasons for that?. Now coming to the main part, which is BSNL. After hearing reviews about their coverage and speed and also free roaming, I went for this one also, but max speed I get is around 0.4 mpbs and mostly it is in less than 0.1 range.

I have right now the 98 plan installed which gives 250 MB, the reason I took this small plan was because of testing. I do not know whether there is some tweaking which needs to be done in OS. The dongle software by the way takes the settings automatically for all providers. More funny is that when I try to run speedtest with BSNL, most of the times, it gives the errors as "configuration load failed" or otherwise the ping time is almost 400+ ms and then the usual results.

My problem is I travel a lot with both my laptop and Android and as you all know, aircel and Idea charge very hefty for data usage outside the circle. My next two trips are going to be in Karnataka in Bangalore, Mysore and Hassan districts and another one in MP and Chattisgarh area in Raipur, Bilaspur and Durg and then probably another to Bombay.

Please suggest me any provider apart from BSNL who provides free roaming on data and also who have the best 3G services in Karnataka, Chattisgarh and Bombay. Also anyway to sort out this BSNL low speed issue.

    Regards,

    Samar

I was in Bangalore, Mysore and Bombay in the past month and carried my laptop. I bought a Karnataka local 3G SIM of Idea as well as I had MTS which is free all over India. Believe me, Idea was clocking around 5 MBPS in night times and a minimum of 1 MBPS which was enough for my work. MTS on the other hand surprised me with uniform speeds all over between 700 KBPS to 1.5 MBPS which was more than enough for my work purpose. BSNL on the hand fared horribly with rarely speeds coming up above 100 KBPS. Your best bet, if you are on move buy one MTS card and when you land in some other state for 7 days or more, find the best 3G ISP there and purchase a local SIM. Even then, most probably by April 2013, Data Roaming will be free, so also no need to worry, but never rely on BSNL.

I am in Chennai. Me too purchased a BSNL 3G dongle on expecting better speed and lower cost. But the speed is very pathetic. After so many complaints, the activation is made by bsnl. I have to wait for 3days for that activation. The dongle speed is stated as 3.6Mpbs. The signal is shown 3bars. What can I do? I am seriously thinking to surrender.

BSNL wireless 2G/3G/4G like Tata Docomo's Tata Photon requires signal booster apparatus with antenna. Therefore, not suited for mobile wireless connectivity. For the fact, BSNL's landline ADSL broadband is not something to boast about either though it is now charging a hefty charge for subscribers wanting fiber line connectivity. If you want good connectivity then you need to pay for it like Aircel and Idea. May be soon (next year) the government is going to do away with roaming charges outside circles as promised by Kapil Sibal.
