Are you able to browse internet after the torrent's apparent breakdown?

Does the modem show the signal (DSL light is up)? Do you have this problem anytime or just at night?

An elaborate situation description may help in eliminating causes.

If you are using a dialer ,
Use the LANport of modem and ethernet port in Computer.
If possible select Mod GDMT and try.

As far as I understand you have an old machine or you have some spyware/adware which is taking up too many resources at times which freezes your computer.

What specs is your box and which OS? Have you tried running your antivirus and do you have a firewall? have you scanned your pc for adware and spyware?

Is your firewall and antivirus updated? is your OS updated?

Using usb to connect to the modem does take up more resources as compared to ethernet cable.
