Exclamation External IP redirecting to router setup! HELP!

When I type my external (public) IP on the adresss bar, it goes to my router setup/config page. (just like when you go by private ip 192.168.1.1) which can mean that anyone on the net who gets my IP can access my router config simply by typing in my IP in their browser. I dont want this. Even though I can change router's password for security, I want to disable that problem.

    How can I remove it?

This problem does not happen with my old router which is not a bsnl supplied one. Unfortunately, I dont hav it nw

My router modem is supplied from BSNL and its model is : DNA-A211-1 (wireless)

Hello. You are afraid for nothing. You see that your router knows that your external IP and your internal IP translate to the same MAC id. That is why it automatically redirects you. This is not possible for any other party to do it.
    • You can try to simulate this.
    • Switch on your home network, router, PC, etc.
    • Note down your external IP address.
    • Visit a nearby cyber cafe and try to type http://<your ext ip address>>.
    • It will not work unless port 80 is open and forwarded.

Presume you are using firefox browser.
When you type the present Dynamic Ip address in address bar ,After you get the log-in page try admin and type any other password . could you proceed further ?
Sometimes this is an advantage, for a trusted friend to check the settings of your modem and advise you provided you tell him your current dynamic IP.
And if you are on "DIalup" ("bridged") mode your UserID and password are not accessible.
Assuming someone also gets your UserID and password nothing can be done by him !
We allow complete access to our computer with program like LogmeIn etc.

    Check your IP with.
    Current IP Check
Addon for FF externalIP 0.9.9.4 . Your current IP will appear in status bar.You can also set it, to get a message if the IP changes.
Which Tariff plan you have selected? Did you get a static IP which will never change ?

Para two : If you use the WIFI mode ensure the wireless Network is protected with security key preferably WEP. See excellent posts in this forum

@essbebe, Yes it is possible to proceed further. You can try it yourself if you are connected at your home.

The NAT service in the router translates your external IP address to your internal IP address. So when you are inside your own network, when you type http://<your ext ip address>, it will open your router web config page.

But this will not work with someone else. Your friend, for instance, cannot login to your router because port 80 of your IP address is blocked.

    Agreed.
try admin and type any other password
    .
I only told him to try with a different PW .
(He cannot access his routers web page). and change the default password usually admin or password or 1234 or none.
Then someone , must know which ISP I am using. or guess or try at random different IPs of different ISPs
He should know when i am on line and my ISP.
I have already tried it online as a test :my Airtel USERID ( telephone number) was sent as PM back to me !
Another user tried it and got the wrong information, because I disconnected and reconnected again !. IP changed !
THen I warned the other Airtel user to change her modem's Password.! She was really surprised , how I got her telephone number !

Actually, Let me give more details.

    My IP is dynamic.

I have protected wireless network on router by WEB protection (ie with a good password)

yes, I can access my router config page by entering my external ip even from my laptop which is connected by the same internet by wifi wireless.
And yes, by that, if correct user and password is given, there is full access to the router.

I have opened port 80 and 6668 in NAT for my purposes. But even though canyouseeme.org website shows that those ports are open, im not able to access them properly in my webbrowser. They show " The connection was refused when attempting to contact " (firefox 3.0.3) I persume this is caused by this problem.

In NAT, I configured server IP as 192.168.1.2 (my desktop private IP) with correct ports as 80 in first row and 6668 in second row.

But when I type my ext. IP in address bar, such as "xxx.xxx.xxx.xx..:6668" , It does not work. while when i try "192.168.1.2:6668" , my service on that port shows up!
    So why is this.

By the way, my external IP does not "redirect" to the private ip to be precise, it GOES to the DSL router (config) page.

Open fresh thread for PF troubles
    and mention your modem/router model.
    Post ipconfig/all data also.
    Para two:
Refer portforward.com for PF for your modem/router and application/s.

Port forwarding is not my main problem. I've just added it so that may be related to my problem. So that is why no new thread i made..

I dont need any port forwarding info. I've done it perfectly fine. What it may be that this redirecting problem might be causing this Port Forward trouble and im somewhat sure of it.

This redirecting thing is what I need to get fixed.

i think the best thing to do to clear all your doubts is to ask some friend of yours to open your external ip 59.x.x.x or 117.x.x.x from his/her pc.. if it opens your modem screen.. then you have to disable remote administration in your router.. so i think the first thing to make sure is this.. once you are clear about this, you could proceed with your port 80 forwarding..

All right so for public people, my ext. IP does not redirect to my setup. ( I tested with a frnd). But why can't it work just like that on my side (as well as on MY wifi network)????

I dont want the router to redirect to my setup when I enter my ext IP from my side for my debugging reasons. So is there any way I can off it?

A non wireless router (non BSNL one) that I had didnt show this problem. So is it that only wireless routers show this problem? Or does it have anything to do like editing MAC settings? I am a complete newbie in MAC address thing. Havent fingured out what that means.

PS: Thanks to all for helping me by their replies till now..
