Default BB connection problem in Kolkata, Ultadanga area

I am facing net connection problem from this month (Oct 2008), though it worked very smooth with higher speeds most of the time. I have purchased ADSL modem from BSNL, of make Nokia Simens, in Aug 2008, under plan Home 500 C.

From last two weeks the DSL light blinks continuously and stabling for few minutes then again starts blinking. Unable to get Net connection in all hours of the day + night. If connection happens, it lasts just 4/5 minutes and lost.

Switching off and starting the modem after a few minutes wait, sometimes solves but the connection do not last over 5 minutes.

Please enlighten me if there is some problem with the BSNL server in our area or so, or is it any problem with the ADSL modem.

More information can be provided, if required.

What modem are you using? Post your modem stats.

Now either the line is faulty or the modem. In my case, the modem was faulty.

    Hi iChaitanya and superprash2003,

I found a tentative solution after reading the thread "Problem of Disconnection in internet in Home500", specially "shajiswamy" reply.

dsl indicator stands for the connection status between modem and corresponding equipment installed in telephone xchange, if it fails conection to the isp fails most probebly fault due is to line resistance , earth lakage, and line impedence.

This gave me the idea that most probably my dsl to bsnl server is creating the problem and my modem is alright. I have cleaned my computer table, for pre Diwali preparation, and arranged all the wires hanging behind the computer table. The telephone wire which was hanging loosely, was arranged with other wires of the dsl modem, i.e. the power cord, and the computer wires.

This may be creating the faced problem, as per "shajiswamy" reply above, so again I made all wires hang loosely (just think my dilemma in trying to remember which wire was hanging how and where, so much so for trying to be organized).

After that yesterday night and today the connection the yellow dsl light is showing stability and speed is more or less OK. I will check this arrangement for few days and revert back.

BTW my modem is Nokia Siemens Networks SL2-141 and below is the modem status,

    DSL Status

    Status SHOWTIME
    Mode G.DMT
    Type Interleave

    Downstream Upstream
    Rate (Kbps) 7580 761
    SNR Margin (dB) 4.9 7.0
    Attenuation (dB) 23.0 20.5
    Attainable Rate (Kbps): 8237 960
    Output Power (dBm) 12.1 19.8
    Super Frames 21121 21120
    Super Frame Errors 102 184

If there is some suggestion on the above, please give.

Thanks again to all in the forum for all the hints an advises.

Your downstream SNR value(4.9) is very low which is the cause of your frequent disconnection. It should above 10. Get your telephone line checked.

Check ur Telephone line !! and use adsl splitters to use both phone and adsl modem !!! dnt use ordinary splitters as they do contribute in frequent disconnection

as mentioned above you need to ensure that all your telephones are connected after the splitter..

no rule that downstream has to be more than upstream.. but generally yes downstream is normally more than upstream..

@Evander Leopold, my downstream SNR value(18 dB) is less than the upstream SNR value(23 dB). I dont think it really matters.

    Hi All,

After making all my telephone wires, power wires etc. hang loosely and without overlapping each other, my BB speed increased to what I had experienced before this problem. Below is the current Status,

    DSL Status

    Status SHOWTIME
    Mode ADSL2
    Type

    Downstream Upstream
    Rate (Kbps) 13579 865
    SNR Margin (dB) 8.4 16.8
    Attenuation (dB) 16.0 8.2
    Attainable Rate (Kbps): 13961 1261
    Output Power (dBm) 12.3 19.4
    Super Frames 89511 85698
    Super Frame Errors 219 12585

Though I do not understand much of it, but on scrutiny it looks that the "SNR" has increased whereas the "Attenuation" has decreased.

Any further advise on it guys ?

    Anand

Attenuation is the nothing but loss of signal and should be low. Its good that your attenuation has decreased.

Your SNR(signal noise ratio) could be better.
