Do you remember changing anything near the time you started experincing slow speed from?

Do you experience slow speeds only during the free night time? or is it the same during the day as well?

i had changed utorrent settings according to various online suggestions and had half open ports increased to 50. But that shouldnt matter anymore cause i formatted and installed winXp freshly yesterday. The problem is still there.
yes, the problem persists during daytime too.
i checked with 'speedtest.net'.according to them my download speed has decreased to
40kBps which used to be 200kBps.
    neway, thanks for replying.any suggestions???

I would wait for essbebe to come and help you out... he has a very systematic approach for troubleshooting issues such as yours.

In the mean time please post this data :

    SNR Margin (dB):
    Attenuation (dB):
    Output Power (dBm):
    Attainable Rate (Kbps):
    Rate (Kbps):

Thanks. Hope I measure up to the task.
Got usual data snr/attn line speed mod etc as

Probably your MOD mode selected is ADSL2 +
1.If you can change it to GDMT ( your router classification may be different)
Attainable D/L rate will reduce and SNR may improve
    Giving a stable connection.
SNR hig more than >10 db and ATTN < 30 to 40 db worst case. If ATTN is more , presumed you are far away from the Exchange. Confirm.
    2. Check speed at same test site.
About torrents later. See "Broadband How to..... " thread here.

ensure that all your telephones are connected after the splitter.. that could increase your SNR a bit..

He's not the only one: since the past four days something has gone terribly wrong with my connection. Before that, I used to download from Rapidshare or Megaupload at around 200 kbps (fluctuating between 180 to 220 kpbs), then suddenly now it has fallen to around 10 to 20 kbps. Utorrent starts off very slowly, with the speed increasing from about 50 kpbs at the beginning to finally 200 kbps (at times only) but after almost half an hour > so what is it doing, searching for seeds all this time?

Actually, I read a post by Essbebe and downloaded Connection Booster, and earlier I had a problem with the connecting - my connection would keep breaking for the first two minutes before becoming stable. I also changed from ADSL2+ with EC mode with Bitswap disabled to G.DMT and FDM mode with Bitswap enabled, and the connection seems to have become more stable, but I still can't download from Rapidshare. I've changed it back to ADSL2+. With Internet Download Manager I could get above 200 kpbs speeds, now even with it, I get only around 20 kbps. Yesterday in the evening I downloaded a file from RS and it downloaded at full speed, which set me thinking if BSNL is throttling the speeds during the free nighttime.

I am copying everything from the 192.168.1.1 page here:

    Summary:
    Model Name: MT880
    Data Path: Interleave
    DSP Version: D.57.2.17
    Operation mode: ADSL2+
    Output Power: 12.4 dB

    ADSL Link Speed:
1021 Kbps (Up), and 10239 Kbps (Down) < in the G.DMT mode, the down speed was somewhere around 9000 kbps.
Previous TX and RX Rate: 0 kbps
SNR: 8.3 dB (Up), 7.5 dB (Down)
    CRC - both zeros
Attenuation: 22.5 dB (Up), 44.0 dB (Down)
    FEC - both zeros
HEC (ATM Layer) - both zeros

    WAN Settings:
    PVC Number: PVC-0
    Wan Type: RFC2684Bridged
    Connection Type: Pure Bridged
    Encap.: LLC

    DHCP: enabled
    Starting IP: 192.168.1.2
    Ending IP: 192.168.1.33

    DNS Status: enabled
    Primary DNS address: 218.248.240.208
    Secondary DNS address: 218.248.240.135
(I hear DNS servers affect your browsing speed; is everything alright here?)

    NAT: enabled
    UPNP: disabled
VPN Pass-Through: both PPTP and IPSec enabled

    Static Route: nothing filled up

    Virtual Server: enabled

Special Applications is enabled, and has some stuff that I don't remember putting it there: Battle.net; Dialpad; ICU II; MSN Gaming Zone; PC-to-Phone; Quick Time 4.

    Filters: IP Filters
    Status: disabled; Action: allow

    Firewall:
    Black List Status: disabled
Use Attack Protection, and Use Dos Protection - both 'deny'
Max TCP and ICMP count: 100; Max Host Count: 30

And the mode: ADSL2+, FDM, Bitswap enabled.

If I've missed out on something here, please ask.

I started Utorrent at about four o'clock, and I got about 140 kpbs speed, and this continued till about seven, even though the torrents were all well-seeded ones. Then all of a sudden after seven, the speed jumped to 220 kpbs and stayed that way till the end.

thanks for ur suggestions. Learned many things from em.

Anyway, bsnl provided me with a new port and all seems to be well now. They said my port was damaged/corrupt.

^ even I am facing the same.downstream rate reduced from 11200 kbps to 2044 kbps.My upload speed has been drastically reduced to only 48 kBps and download merely touches 140 kBps.

What is more painful if I upload torrents download speed reduces to 40 kBps.Already complained but Line is Ok according to them.

    1.7Kbps is reasonably good.
instead of testing with speed test .net, try www.dataone.in speed test at the bottom of page, it would help you to know condition between your server and your modem.
