Default Slow browsing speed, but full downloading with Utorrent.

I first thought that this is a temporary problem, but it has been going on for a week now:

Everday, during the morning 2 to 8 free hours, I can download at full speed with Utorrent (maximum: ~220 kbps), but I can't download at all with the browser. I get speeds like 8 and 10 kbps from Rapidshare and Megaupload and Netload.in, and all other places. I currently use Opera, but using Firefox or IE also doesn't help. I also have Internet Download Manager, and earlier it could speed up the downloads, but now even with IDM, the problem remains the same - the downloads continue at 10 kbps from Rapidshare and all. I use that mode - what do you call it - where you manually connect (the modem itself doesn't connect) - and I have tried reconnecting, and switching off the modem and restarting, and even rebooting the computer, quite a few times, but to no avail. But if I turn on Utorrent, the downloads reach 220 kbps with well-seeded torrents.

Now the thing is that this problem doesn't remain for the whole day: it is there only in the morning. Later on in the day, if I download from Rapidshare or wherever, I get the full speed; IDM is able to suck ~250 kbps.

So what could the problem be? Bcoz this morning, after about six AM, the sites simply didn't open, while nothing stopped Utorrent from attaining full speed. If it was a DNS error (I don't really know what it is), would it affect IDM as well?

And is anyone else facing a similar problem.

    I live in Gujarat.

i really don't think that its a problem with any settings or computer, seems like its a time limited slowness issues. According to me best idea to call your ISP and discuss the same, if cust. care people don't understand then visit your exchange

I think you can call the customer service engineer of your ISP and see what is their opinion on this.

please update if it is a server issue, it may help other members too. If you are facing this problem during specific time only then it should be a exchange or network problem only

I doubt contacting BSNL is going to help. Somehow I think they are doing this on purpose, since I was busy downloading from Rapidshare before this problem happened. My daily average is 2.7 GB; this month's total is around 71 GB. Now I have to rely only on torrents, and while that's ok, since I get full speed there as well, I have unfinished files from RS.

Anyway, contacting the BSNL office will be on Monday now, doubt if it is open during this time, or if they will respond at all.

sure you can contact BSNL tomorrow morning and simply tell them what problem you are facing and do remember to specify that you are getting slow speed during a specific time only, i am sure it will help you

just explain one thing , u are using torrents and surfing at the same time or not ??

if yes, then there is no problem , because torrents usually eat up all the bandwidth

This isn't about surfing and downloading through torrents at the same time. Even if I stop all downloads, quit Utorrent, and reconnect the modem, even then the browser doesn't pick up speed - I can browse sites at times, but downloading through RapidShare is simply not possible.

I keep clearing the browser cache all the time, during every session, and then I have some apps that clean the temporary internet files and other temporary files before shutdown.

What I'd like to know is, would using OpenDNS help with Internet Download Manager? I mean, browsing may be affected by the DNS you use, but do IDM downloads also depend on that?

This problem happens off and on. I don't what the exact cause is, but sometimes my rapidshare speed goes down like anything (for a few days at a stretch), then it comes back and reaches about 220-240 kbps, so I don't need to buy an RS account. Actually I don't know about the present, since I've stopped using RS and switched totally to torrents.

    Thanks for your reply Outlander.
I've been using 750 UL plan and the speed is not slow on just RS, even I can't download on usual speed from direct download links from sites like softpedia, microsoft etc. Currently my downloading speed is just 3-15 KB/sec while the usual downloading speed for a 750 UL plan is 30-40 KB/sec.

torrents are peeer to peer networks...there is no DNS involved. Bsnl servers just route those packets. This is "dumb" work.
surfing etc. is through DNS & therefore through bsnl servers. Servers have to probably use routing algorithms etc in this case.

So if bsnl server sux @peak hours then we can't do much about it.
if they are suppressing bandwidth...well, atleast complain in large numbers to get their attention.

I was also using open dns server. Now again switched over to BSNL DNS due to low browsing speed. Try yourself.

I am also facing the same problem from the past 3-4 days. During the 2am-8am timings the torrent speeds hovers around 120-130 kbps max against the standard 190-200 kbps. However during daytime, site browsing has become more or less impossible as I need to constantly refresh the pages for the pages to load fully . Whats going on , has there been a under sea cable breakage again anywhere ?

Whats even more wierd is that when I did a download test from testmy.net I got the full 220 kbps speed, then why the hell is browsing so slow. Constant refreshing ans still sometimes the page dont load. Wonder whats wrong here ? By the way I have a Smartax MT 841 connected to my D Link Dir 655 wireless router. I know I am being stupid but any chance of a virus ??

Absolutely... I'm also having the same problem since 1 week now.... I think it's a problem with bsnl servers... Since torrent speed is max(independant of dns server), it's a problem with bsnl for sure.......
