    Default Utorrent with 2mbps connection

If there is a ADSL connection which has 2mbps theoretically it means that one can attain 256KBps speed. But while using utorrent the speed won't go higher than 185 KBps. This is because, on 2 mb connection, upload speeds are 861 kbps (around 80 KBps). So the 80 KBps upload speed won't allow your client to attain higher download speed than 185 KBps. But while downloading files from ftp servers speeds go as high as 220 KBps. Is there a way to make the torrent client to attain maximum possible speeds?

I don't think there is any such connection with upload speed and download speed. With my Home 750 ul plan, I get max 32 KB download & 28 KB upload speed in utorrent. If your calculation is right, then I would only get 32 - 18 = 14 KB speed max right ?

Those who have BSNL unlimited connection will not face this problem. Because they'll have 32Kbps download speeds and almost same upload speed. Only those who have 1Mb or more than 1mb connection will face this problem. This is because on a ADSL2 connection maximum attainable speed is less than 1mbps. For example if you have got 8mbps download speeds the upload speeds will be less than 1mbps.

Well I don't know that because I never tried utorrent in any other besides 750 UL plan. But if you think that's the case then you can limit your upload speed to 15/10 KB until your download is completed.

What I'm trying to say is ADSL technology works on the assumption that users will always download more than they upload. So on a ADSL2 connection bandwidth for uploading is very low (below 1Mbps), but downloading bandwidth is about 16 Mbps. But for torrents to work properly one has to upload with almost the same speed as one downloads. So because ones broadband won't allow higher upload speeds his download speeds will suffer. Even I've noticed on this forum many users who have 2mbps connection saying that they got dl speed around 160-190 KBps.

    I have 2mbps bsnl broad-band.
I download on a regular basis ( using utorrent ) at 130kBps average and upload at 40kBps average. I have tested my highest upload speed and reached 73kBps easily, but it is a known fact that if u upload at highest possible rate using any torrent client : ur download rate automatically suffers.
Now, everybody knows that uploading is important. but no one is going to upload while choking their downloads. so our duty is to find the max upload speed which doesnt have -ve effect on download speed. Here at my line, that speed is 40kBps. Almost every friend of mine, here in kolkata, use this upload/download ratio.
U have to cap ur upload speed to a lower value to get good download. This has nothing to do with leeching. If u cant get 8mbps connection in ur country at an affordable rate, that is not ur fault.

its has nothing to do with ur upload speed its because bsnl and other isps of the world cap the speed of torrents and p2p"s....i get speed of only 27kBps from torrents and p2ps but while downloading from websites i get around 36kBps..its protocol encryption.

In India ISP's don't block bt protocol. TO find out whether your ISP is capping bt google for 'Bad ISPs - Azureus Wiki'.

that is because the trackers wont allow you to download until you upload...for ex..btjunkie or mininova or any other public tracker

For those who are worried about capping bt protocol or wanting to be anonymous there is an interesing set of instruction. If you want to read about it google for 'How to set up Azureus to work with Tor'.

The speed will be very low in Tor. It's a proxy service.

In ADSL technology, download and upload is asychronous, i.e., download is not interrupted while upload is going on and vice versa. Also in ADSL, voice communications are on separate channel/frequency (but you do need a splitter to separate voice and data). However, there is a relation between download and upload and especially when upload is high, download suffers.

Having said that, here are a few pointers for torrents:

    a) For every torrent, you are downloading and uploading. Uploading is going on even when you are downloading (and not just when pure seeding). This is because you may have a piece of the entire file that others may want.
    b) The ratio of download to upload is always calculated and maintained.
    c) Trackers track the the download:upload ratio. If the ratio is too low and you have capped the upload speed, then tracker will also limit the download rate.
    d) But if you keep the upload rates as maximum (0=no limit), then download suffers also because program is busy trying to upload.

So what should one do? The answer is provided in any torrent help.

    a) First measure your internet speed on a reliable site such as Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test.
    b) Check the upload speed. Let us assume that you have a 2 mbps connection and your actual results are 1900 kbps (dn) and 244 kbps (up).
    c) Multiply the upload speed by 0.8. In our example, this would be ~196 kbps.
    d) Open uTorrent --> Speed guide. (use Ctrl+G hotkey)
    e) In the current settings box, choose the value xx/nnn value that is closest to your value calculated in step (c). In out example, this is xx/192k. Choose this value and click on apply.
