Default Your 2 cents needed !

    Hey there Peeps !

So I recently shifted to Bombay ! At Lonavala ( in the vicinity of Bombay ) to be precise !

I have had no experience with any providers in India before.

Was wondering which provider is the most reliable and which would give me good speeds !

Currently i have gotten myself a 256 Kbps BSNL connection but this connection is way too slow...all youtube vids need to be paused for buffering.

Now my prime occupation on the internet is multiplayer gaming which as many of u may know is not possible at 256 kbps. I am in need of atleast 2 Mbps.

So my question is ...which connection is best suited for gaming purposes in Inndia and if I am to buy a 2 Mbps BSNL connection does it really gimme 2 Mbps speed ? ( my friends here have been telling me that i can never get 2 Mbps speed and that its all just a selling gimmick :36: )

Kindly help a buddy out ! Oh and any of you broadband users indulge in online gaming yourselves ? Anyone playing Company of Heroes ? :blushing:

    Thanks already !

    Hi Ten Hut
    Welcome to Indiabroadband.net

BSNL is not available in Mumbai, MTNL works in Delhi and Mumbai, so you can look for an option from MTNL otherwise there are lot many other ISP's which can provide you better speed. If you want connection for Gaming only then better idea is to go for a cable provider coz as per i know most of the DSL service providers have interleaving option as ON By Default which gives a lag/ latency while playing online.

There are few gamers on our forum, just wait for them to post these days they are busy with CS

You will get around 1.6 to 1.8 mbps on BSNL. But these (high speeed) connections are with limited usage only. Playing online games is very bandwidth hungry as I understand. Your 2.5 GB usage per month may not be enough.

Personally, I don't play games - online or otherwise.

If you watch online Videos then you should go for some UL plans. But BSNL's plans UL750 plan is pretty slow. So better check out for some other ISP.

Well actually I am in Lonavla where BSNL does seem to be providing me with a connection and if I am not wrong BSNL seems to be the ONLY provider in my area. I am not exactly in Bombay but rather at a hill station near bombay which goes by the name of Lonavla.

Now I have come accross a BSNL Business Tariff plan which quotes a speed of 2 Mbps with a DL / UL limit per month of 75 GB.Fee is Rs 9000 per month. Additional DL/UL charges after I have depeleted the 75 GB free usage are reckoned at 50 p per MB

The above plan sounds the only viable one as any other plan are on the lines of 512kKps upto 2 Mbps or 256 Kbps Upto 2 Mbps. I am not liking the word "Upto" there....I am worried that "upto" will be the culprit with these connections and i wont actually get 2 Mbps. So i am opting for the initial 9000 plan

I am uploading BSNL tariff pdf just incase anybody is interested in it !

I will have to look into this...Called up Hathway and Youtelecom guys but they are not in a position to get me a connection at my site of residence :36:

There are few gamers on our forum, just wait for them to post these days they are busy with CS

Any idea how long the BSNL guys would take to get me a 2 Mbps connection ? ON calling them they said anything between 4 weeks to 6 Weeks which is very disheartning

Any way to make them get it faster for me ? I dont mind shelling a few bucks to oil their machinery :blushing:

I had half wondered why my second post was being moderated too. I came to a conclusion that mabye the first few posts end up being moderated untill one can be sure that the new user wont be contributing crap to the forums !

As it turns out the registration email landed in my spam box...resulting in...well resulting in that which has resulted

    Have done the needfull now..

For online gaming... Youtele is best... Only problem is their customer care service... But as u said... Youtele is not providing service in ur area... Then probably Airtel or Sify are the next best options for you... Check out their plans and availability of service in ur area...

    BSNL sucks for online gaming!

Sify is not recommended in North India as from what i here from users [Like this Forum Admin Parminder bro and Moderator Smoothvibes ] Sify sucks big time because

    --> Forget unlimited , Sify does'nt have a 2mbps plan !
--> Its got fragile infrastructure which disconnects/jams every other day
--> The only thing Sify CustomerCare know is to pick up a telephone and that they do very rarely

Note : This forum was opened because of great SIfy

    Airtel

-->In my Opinion the most reliable ISP
-->Dont know if they provide a 2mbps connection

    BSNL

    -->Most economial
    -->Provide the highest speeds [Home 2mbps , Business 8mbps]
-->Everything including Bandwidth is Subject to change
-->Your friend was correct , not very reliable either

    Personally
    Yeah i play games
    and i have played COH
But only on Lan and single player [Blame it on my isp/Sify]

I was wrong when i said i have got 256 Kbps plan
The problem is i never applied for the existing connection. It was my company ..hence the error on my part .

I looked into the BSNL contract papers and it says I have got a 3300 2 Mbps home plan..:36: needless to say this is very very very disheartning as the speed I am getting is nowhere even close to 2 Mbps. Its not even 256 Kbps.
Called BSNL people and their reply was that I could get 2 Mbps only if its technically feasible on my line
I dont know if i am right in feeling that I am being cheated.

Anyways...i am switching over to business 9000 2 Mbps plan and sincerely hope i will get 2 Mbps. They said i will...which i dont know how if my line isnt supporting higher speeds. Situation looks bleak to me but I am just being hopelessly hopeful :36:

OK. But your expenses alone are over 10K. So you get paid for time + expenses?

It would be interesting to know the model as this may interest some members. Hence PM will be a bad idea.

Was out of town for a few days ! BSNL has refused to give me Business plan. Apparently its only for Companies. But they have promised me that they would do away with the technical difficulties and arrange for a 2 Mbps speed on the 3300 2 Mbps Home plan. I am guessing they would work on it now or that there never existed any technical difficulties and that they were just sitting on their lazy bums

You are going to spend Rs. 9000 per month (plus taxes @ 12.36%) to play online games???
I dont spend anything. I am a RELIC Gametester. We test games for bugs, imbalances, glitches in their alpha, beta and retail phases. We also look out for community feedback and are integrated in many gaming forums to see what the gamers are complaining about in a particular game
We are a part of the quality testing that every game has to go through.

9000 is ca 150 Euros. Relic has paid more than that to get me a connection in germany for the last past 6 years. So i am guessing they wont be mad at paying 150 Euros ( which btw is now 55 Euros as I am sticking to 3300 2mbps Home plan ) Infact they would be very happy with it.

plus shadowcon has summed it up pretty much when he says
    For a Gamer it is
    *Advanced Rig
    *Fast Internet connection
    *Latest Game DVDs

You made things much clear. But I believe that server pings are too long and latency is too high.

I was not employed at EA. I was on project there. But that is just a matter of technical legality.

That said, EA did not have many popular online games at that time (2003-04-05). The most popular online EA game at that time (if I am not mistaken) was Ultima Online.

And since I worked on their ERP applications, I knew that main revenue was from console games and then PC - than made the revenue to 85%. I was never interfaced to their studio directly.

My only other interaction with games @ EA was their consoles at every corner of the buildings/floors, the library (which stocked games and movies) and the inhouse shop.

One of my friend worked abroad for some time with EA... He told me EA has 4 world class soccer stadiums at Canada where many popular teams and their star players come time to time to do modelling for graphics of Fifa games of EA Sports... He was privileged to see many popular soccer players there...
