Thumbs down when part of net down why are some sites down?

i thought the great thing about a network like the internet was that u cannot kill it by harming part of it ... might become slower but other routers take on the job of affected routers ...

so why is it that a lot of sites like paypal . com santaletternow freetext . com are not working since friday?

    using bsnl in Bangalore

May be there is some problem in the dns servers you are using. Try using opendns servers. Visit opendns.com, set ur dns to
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

it was weird that most of the websites did not work for me during the past 2 months..including mibbit, hp, invisionfree and most other sites..all i could do was use yahoo, google, msn and microsoft... then i came upon a website like this by accident which gave the DNS server IPs of BSNL Dataone.
    Here is the original site

    dataone.in

    I used the IPs
    61.1.96.69
    61.1.64.65

    Instead of these IPs
    218.248.240.208
    218.248.240.135

Now the problem is solved and i can open all sites

Shouldn't the modem automatically update this? How am I supposed to know when to update the DNS IPs everytime >_>

    Hope this doesnt happen again

As mentioned in this thread : http://www.indiabroadband.net/airtel...-1-5-days.html (Extreme slow down since 1.5 days) You would experience higher ping times and slower speeds till those cables are repaired... at the moment the work is in progress by some Itelian firm and shouldnt take too long.

Your issue may or may not be connected to this cables problem or slow speed it sounds more like a DNS issue.

Try open dns instead of the ones provided by your isp and see if things improve.

Do let us know if this helped.

Although I am not the best person to answer this question but as far as I understand while gaming your system doesnt go through any server and connects directly to other gamers so dns doesnt play any role while the game is on.

    PS: I might be wrong.

While gaming online, ur pc sends data to the server (where the game is hosted, it can be a private pc, that means anyone can host the game, others around the world can connect to ur server if they know ur ip and are not stopped by firewalls) and receives data back. the longer time (in mili sec) it takes the slower/crappy gaming u get. DNS servers are not involved in this process as ADMIN already said.
So, there is no possible way to improve latency/ping. There is one chance though, if the server is hosted by one of ur pals ( supposing u know each other ), u can always tell the person with the lowest latency to host the game. Not applicable for official servers.
Anything else u wanna know ?

try some private game hosting sites. google it. they offer users to create and host servers. that way u will have the flexibility to play on indian servers. (i play CS1.6 regularly)
    and hopefully avoid high latency.
