I heard that BSNL doesn't come if the customer purchases the router. They just call and let us know over the phone that the internet is ready.

Is there any body who can suggest the which Linksys Wireless Router (model name and no.) i should go for?

and also will this same guideline can be followed for configuring it?
I will strongly advise in going in for a BSNL provided modem/router. A few reasons:

    a) BSNL offers good modems (wired and wireless).
    b) BSNL will support you.
    c) BSNL will complete the installation for you.
    d) In case of purchased modem, there will be one year warranty - in case of rented modem complete warranty till the rental term.

If you insist on Linksys modems, make sure that you buy an ADSL2+ modem + wireless router such as WAG-200G. It will cost you nearly Rs. 3700/-. Note that a plain wireless router will not do - you need a modem + router.

    @just4kix,

Thanks for the reply and giving me the explanation.

I would like to clarify few doubts.

    - In total how many devices are needed for the internet? I am thinking modem + router . Router is purchased by me and modem is provided by BSNL. Am i right?

    - In dataone tariff page. I see Type i to type iv modem/routers. Which one is for router. i guess itis type iv. the price for that is just 1600 where as purchasing own is 3700/-. Why is that so?

    - Do they have customer care number where we can get on-call support like airtel?

    - I read in this forum or some other site. that don't go for bsnl wirles modem get your own.

I am still confused modem and wireles are two devices need or only one device.

It may sound stupid doubt. but do clarify.

    Thanks in advance!

At the minimum you need a wired modem. An ADSL modem is also a router because it has to and can to PCs. You can buy your own separate (wireless) router, but the BSNL provided modem is a modem+router.

As said above all Type I to Type IV are modems+routers.
Type I: Wired modem/router with one USB and one Ethernet connection.
Type II: Wireless modem/router with one USB and many wireless connections.
Type III: Wired modem/router with four Ethernet connections.
Type IV: Wireless modem/router with four Ethernet connections and many wireless connections.

Type IV is the best. You will not need to buy any external wireless router with Type IV (or Type II) modem/router.

Yes. It is 1-800-424-1600. Depending upon your circle you may find the guys at tech support knowledgeable or totally useless.

Wrong assumption. BSNL modem/routers (especially Type IV) is a real value for money at Rs. 1600/-. And as I said before, with a Type IV modem/router, you will not require any other device.

No doubt is stupid. I am glad that you asked. It is better to ask rather than to assume. Problem is, sometimes our ego or fear prevents us from asking questions because we don't want people to think that we are ignorant. Get rid of this phobia.

    Thanks for the explanation.

If i tell BSNL that i would purchase router myself, then bsnl wouldn't provide any device.

I need to get Router which has both abilities modem+ router and Linksys WRT56G2 is not enough. Need to get one more device to get the internet working.

Am i right? the modem/router you mentioned costing 3700/- is costly. Type iv provided by them is 1600/- and rent is 80/- per month for 1st year and 40 for rest of the years.

If i get BSNL and get type IV modem and in future if cancel and get airtel connection. Can this type IV modem be used?

and if i get 3700/-Modem/router can this be used on any other broadband connection?

Yes. You need an ADSL2+ modem+router. WRT54G2 is wireless router only and does not have modem capability - so it is no use.

You can use BSNL's modem with any ISP that provided telephony based broadband (Airtel, Reliance, etc.). It will not work with cable broadband (Hathway, etc.). Same applies to the WAG200G also.

@just4kix, Today my father went to BSNL Office. They told that right now they don't have TYPE III and TYPE IV modems.

I don't want to go for TYPE II. I want a modem where i have wireless ability + 2 to 4 Ethernet Ports.

Please advice which one i need to purchase. Do i need to purchase two devices or just one device which can act as both ?

    Default Problem with the modem

    @Admin..

I have been using BSNL broadband with SmartAx mt882 modem since 2 years and now I want to use the internet on my PC and laptop(through wireless) using Linksys router WRT54G. I have tried the procedure detailed by you in the 1st post of this thread...I went through the entire process of configuring the modem but I faced some problems so i did not proceed with changing the configuration of the router.. Could you please tell me where the error is?

    The problems I faced are:

    1. "You should see the Summary page. The Status is normally Red indicating that the connection is not ON.

·Click on the Plug icon in the Note column to connect."

At this stage the status was already green, I didnot have to click on the plug icon. However I did disconnect and connect.

    2. "Type a website and click on Ping

·You should see Ping Result: Successful"

The ping result was "timed out"

    3. "Open your browser and type your favorite URL. You should be online by this time!"

I was not online and the link LED in the modem was red.

When I changed the WAN type back from PPP to the default RFC2684Bridged option and restarted the modem I got the green link and am now connected to the Internet. I have tried this twice and the same problem is there.

Could you please tell me if I am doing something wrong and what is the solution.

    Thanks

    @essbebe ... thanks for replying
I tried again as u said. But the same issue is recurring. If i change connection type to ppp/pppoe, even after correctly entering username and password i cannot connect to the internet. I also enabled DHCP and set the range from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.33 as suggested by the user sunpraveen in another thread.
I get green status in the modem configuration page for WAN and LAN but in the modem the Link LED is red and I get error 678 if I try to dial and connect to the internet.

    Please help

Please refer to numbers given by me
    and post the results.

    Give enough space between sentences.

    For 1: username without @ dataone.in or @bsnl.in
    YES NO

For 2: did you see the "NOTE" icon ? and click it ?
    YES NO

    For 3: Not tried .
    For 4: not tried
For 5: could not proceed further.

    Para two:
I have the same modem MT882, and
I have to do it in PPP/PPPoE
mode everytime I switch on the modem.
and when I select different ISPs settings.

well it is your choice for selecting the operator but i would suggest that u should conatact the BSNL JTO/SDO (area incharge) even now a days u can contact to GM.they will definitely help u.actually private operators offers seem to be lucarative but all are withh hidden cost.

Try "Always On" mode instead of dialer mode.

Angry Netgear WGR614 queries - Help please!

    Hi,
I have a bsnl dataone broadband connection with the Huawei SmartAX MT882 dsl modem.

I am about to purchase a Netgear WGR614 wireless router to create a wireless network in my home. I need some help with the following queries:

    1. Are there any speed / compatibility issues between the SmartAX MT882 and Netgear WGR614? Do they work properly together or should I go for another router?

    2. Which is better - a USB network adapter or a PCI network adapter?

    3. Is it possible for me to access my broadband internet connection wirelessly with the host computer turned off? What I mean is, if the main computer to which my MT882 modem is connected is turned off, and only the modem and wireless router are switched on, can I still access my internet connection wirelessly using my other computer (which has a wireless adapter)?

    Thank you!
    -Srijan

Unhappy Problem configuring SmartAX MT882 - HELP!

I have a Huawei SmartAX MT882 adsl modem and I recently bought a netgear WGR614 wireless router. I've been trying hard, unsuccessfully, to configure it.

I followed the instructions here and changed the WAN settings accordingly. After the modem restarted, the Status on the Summary page was Red, as expected.

But after clicking on the plug icon in the notes column, it still doesn't connect and it stays red. Now I don't know what to do.

Also, after changing the WAN settings, I can no longer connect to the internet. I have to reset the modem to factory defaults in order to connect.

    Please help!
    Thanks.
