Unhappy Weird problem on Home 500 plan. Please Help :(

Hi, I am Prashanth from a very remote village in Karnataka.

I have loads of problems with my Home 500 net connection. The reason why I am asking for help from you guys because the BSNL here at my place is not responding to my problems positively. They are ignoring it on purpose. There's only one guy who knows about net connection. He's AE. But he's trained only to setup net connection by connecting and configuring routers(dsl modem). Other than that he's a n00b.
I am having weird problems from the month of November. I have called the BSNL more than a dozen times and stormed into their office personally 5 times. I can't take it anymore. If I was rich, I surely would have filed a lawsuit against them.

I am getting VERY low speeds during night ( from 2 to 8 ) from all sites. Surprisingly, I am getting quite good speed from torrents that use private trackers. Those bastards at BSNL are capping http traffic instead of P2P (torrent) ? huh

I ran speedtest on Speedtest.net and on the Dataone site. Both reported that I do have 1.6 - 1.7 Mbps connection.
But whenever I download from any site, I get riduculously low speeds like below 15 KB/s. Before Nov, I was getting speeds like 190 KB/s to 210 KB/s during night !!!
I even tried from a friend's RS premium account but it's the same.
The ATi Catalyst Driver download site has one of the fatest servers ( was getting 210 KB/s) is now giving me just 20 KB/s.

I even tried Hotspot Shield VPN but it's the same case there.

The first thing I did was - I searched the "Terms and Condition" (which most of us ignore) of DataOne. Alas I found one on googling. They should have made it available at their site. I read it through and found that they haven't declared that they ( have the right to ) cap downloads. This is offense - a serious one !
Please have a look at it tell me if they have the right to throttle speeds. I have uploaded it. I have highlighted suspicious clauses in it.

    ( I haven't made 15 posts yet )
    pspudupi(dot)googlepages(dot)com/BB_TermsCondition.pdf

And why is BSNL Kolkatta site more resourceful and updated about DataOne than main BSNL site or Karnataka BSNL site ? I found this terms and condition file on BSNL Kolkatta server.

And I do understand that it's UPTO 2 Mbps. But they MUST give me 256 Kbps ( 64 KB/s ) 24x7 which I am not getting at night.

All this could be due to BSNL's throttling it or bad routing. Which one ?
What should be my next course of action ?
I need confirmation that BSNL do this on purpose and it's not a technical glitch.

Thanks in advance and any help is appreciated.

    Config :
    - Quite good PC.
    - Realtek NIC with spoofed MAC address
    - WA3002-G1 router in PPPoE mode.
    - Using OpenDNS
    - IIS running on my PC ( haven't port forwarded port 80 on modem )

And guys do you know how BSNL guys here test my line ? They just call to my house they say that if I can hear them properly, the line is just fine. I thought there was some sort of 'real line test' using some device

I don't think PPoE mode is the culprit. evrything was fine till last month. And why am I suppose to portforward ? what has that to with this problem ?

Check in usage portal your tariff plan.
    Post ipconfig/all data.
Check adsl status mod selected line speed.

    From the usage portal :
HOME 500 downloadspeed -Upto 2 Mbps

Everything is fine on my side. Connectivity is fine. So ipconfig wouldn't give a clue. But as you asked, here it is

Let me make it more clear - the slow speed problem exists ONLY during night free hours ( 2 to 8 ). I just need to verify whether they throttle my speeds or it's bad routing - either of the two, they do it on purpose I guess. What do you think ? And I am having this problem since November long before the undersea cables were damaged (on 18 Dec).

its not weird problem ,its a big problem

even i am facing it,iam from bangalore and i know how it feels when u get slow speeds during free hours

bsnl is aware of the problem, and will only do something if this becomes major issue for them or like people start protesting them, the reason for this slow up is bsnl has given lot of connections without upgrading their network bandwidth of international gateways,so lots of night ul users are online at the same time and everyone wanna use the free hours
    including me and you

so most of the users use this night ul for torrent downloading( as u can use the automatic features without getting up in the middle of night),and they r getting the desired speeds,,but for http downloaders like me,the speed r too slow for downloading files

well i complained twice and they cudnt do anything,so i was frustrated for few month, but now i left it off,coz its simply waste of time to argue with these bsnl officials

so what i wanna say is,just ask them to resolve it,if they didnt meet a higher official personally and complaint,if he didnt do anything, the best thing is stick to torrent downloading until ur http download speeds improve

try to use bridge mode,u will get better speeds than ppoe mode, trust me ,atleast try this, u wont lose anything if u do it

    @essbebe
    Currently, I have ADSL 2+, ANNEX A

    @internet_guy
Thank you internet_guy for your response
Torrents are good for me. But my primary source was RS as I can get old files ( dead torrents or no seeders ). I was too happy before this happened. Can you believe that I was getting RapidShare speeds as high as 180 to 200 KB/s from FREE download.
    [attached a screenshot]

Yes, you are correct. They now are very bandwidth conscious. That's why they stripped down the 900 UL (upto 2 Mbps) to 750 UL ( 256 Kbps ). I still don't understand why people are sitting quiet or are they too dumb. I enquired whether others in my area have the same problem and I think no one cares about it - so no one else has complained to BSNL at my place.

Moreover, when DataOne was introduced at my village 2 years back, the AE guy cam to my house to setup connection. I still remeber what he told me - he told me that if I closed IE and came to my desktop implies that net is not being used. How should that noob know that apps update in the background. He said the same to every person here and many of my newbie friends who listened to him went their bills soar as Windows Updates were turned on. why BSNL recruits such people ? And once he did come to my house to check line. I was using FF and I opened the router page for him. He closed it and loaded the same from IE. He told me that IE was "universal browser". What a dumb ass ..

I live about 2.4 kms from the telephone exchange. They say that it's the distance that's causing the problem. Being a technical person, I know that a typical ADSL line can extend upto 18,000 ft (5.4 km) without signal drop. They are just mad. If distance was factor, how come it worked for me for past 20 months perfectly.

And yes, I'll switch over to Bridge mode. Let's see if that makes any difference.

But legally, they ought to provide at least a bare 256 Kbps through out day and night but they are not doing so. This is what pisses me off

And I hope you know how I feel. Besides, a new problem arose a week back - router looses ADSL sync now and then. This could be due to faulty line or bad DNS. I made them check the line twice and I use OpenDNS. Yet they couldn't solve my problem. Non-resumable downloads like from RS - say download at 98% and poofff ( ADSL LED goes off ) - I feel like hacking into BSNL servers and erase all usage records

even if u get the full speeds from bsnl,if u dont have premium account, then u wont get full speeds in rapidshare and no resume option

try to switch to g.dmt option instead of adsl2+ this will solve the loosing sync problem in your modem,if u dont know how,pls provide the modem model details

let me tell the real truth, most of the people in bsnl dont know abt technical details esepecially in rural areas, even in urbarn areas only handful of bsnl technicians know abt dsl technolgy of bsnl ,its not their fault, its bsnl fault for not training and educating them

so there is no solution for this problem now, bsnl says its upgrading it network and the problems will be solved,so have some patience and stick to torrent downloads to keep u happy

Thanks a lot. Bridge mode definitely has speeded up torrents by a great extent but http speeds are the same.
Losing ADSL sync seems to be a network problem on their side - I changed the mode from ADSL 2+ to g.dmt but it made no difference.

P.S : As all ports are forwarded in Bridge mode, I am getting lots of attacks (random ones). But thanks to my NAV09 - detected all of them. I've got a webserver running - ( just to share files with my friends and I am a security paranoid ). So I need to get a pretty strong one like Comodo or Armor. Anyways thanks for your help. Have a nice day.

u dont need to forward all ports in your modem

just the port of the torrent software shud be forwarded

use this guide to forward the port

PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

as u r in bridged mode u need use a stronger firewall ,i recommend comodo ,i am using it for past 1 1/2 year

regarding loosing the adsl sync make sure u connect telephone line & adsl line from the splitter ,no parallel line shud be used from other outlets in your home

post the connection details of yout modem from http://192.168.1.1

    attentiuon snr etc

    also change the modem password

default password for the modem is admin ,so change it ur desired password so u wont have any attacks

I never keep my modem's password as admin - the default one. that's too stupid thing. yet I've seen many keep it that way. I also have ACL enabled.

I don't have any parallel devices b4 splitter.
Moreover, the BSNL guys say that the telephone line is fine.

And as far as I know, there's no port forwarding thing in Bridge Mode as NAT is not available. By default all ports are forwarded. Please correct me if I am wrong.

And I've used Comodo - has great detection. Now a days afer they integrated so called Anti Virus, it's bloated and resource hog.
    matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php
    Nevertheless, it's the best.

Modulation : ADSL 2+ ( Tried g.dmt but believe me it was still worse - took soo long to connect )
    Annex Mode : Annex_A
SNR Margin : 21.3 db Downstream and 28.1 db upstream
Line Attenuation : 33.0 db Downstream and 20.3 db upstream
Data Rate : 2048 kbps Downstream and 255 kbps upstream

And one more thing, this ADSL dropping sync problem happens many times during day time and it happens very very frequently at night free hours. Like 15 min or so.
And when ADSL sync is lost, If I have any app running that accesses net, then ADSL wouldn't connect at all. So I'll have to stop utorrent and then start all again ( sometimes it takes a lot of time to gather peer from trackers and if ADSL drops frequently, it's a hell ).

Here's why I am desperate. My exams are nearing and I wanted such that I get up at 4. Switch on my PC and utorrent and then turn off the monitor and study till 7:30 in the morning. Meanwhile the utorrent runs, I study hard for my exams. All this scheduled and unattended tasks. But this ADSL losing connection makes me sit in front of my PC. So I just can't concentrate on studies. 7:30 to 8, I just check mails and visit some blogs, forums and social sites. This was my routine and I was very happy with it until this series of problems turned up

exams r more important than internet ,so its better to concentrate on exams, internet will be there all the time,

ur snr vlaues r lil low ,for good connection u need snr arround mid 30s ,even the attention is high ,so there is a problem with line, or maybe with the splitter

regarding port forwarding if urs mt882 model ,or if not post the modem model

yes manual port forwarding is available, it shud be done in the virtual server option for the modems which dont have the nat option

just refer to the port forward guide i mention in my earlier post,it has all types of modem guides

As indicated in the first post of my this thread, I have a WA3002-G1 router
    calcutta.bsnl.co.in/dataoneinstall/mdm08.html

When I was using PPPoE mode, I was forwarding ports ( for utorrent, ftp server and my webserver ) using 'Virtual Server' under 'NAT' tab in 'Advanced Option'. Here's the screenshot.

    portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/UTStarcom/WA3002-g1/WA3002-g14.jpg
    portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/UTStarcom/WA3002-g1/WA3002-g15.jpg

But in Bridge Mode, I don't get that option 'Virtual Server' under 'NAT'. I don't think it's possible in Bridge Mode. Anyways, that's not a problem. I happy this way because uTorrent now always shows the green indicator and peers are gathered fast in Bridge mode. In PPPoE mode, even though I properly forwarded the port manually, many a times the indicator did not turn green and was orange most of the times.

'Exams r more important than internet' - I appreciate it and I think the same. But I do pay 500 per month and if it all I disconnect from their service, they'll take a minimum of 6 months to get a new connection after my exams because there's a long waiting list.

and this time I will not be soft to them and waste my time. I'll give then a week's time to fix it. i'll go and shout at them. i was happy that ppl are realizing bsnl's fraud about night UL thing and are angry as I gather it from this thread
    indiabroadband.net/bsnl-broadband/12321-my-letter-bsnl-regarding-non-existant-night-unlimited-2-8-broadband-home-500-a.html
