According to BSNL , this is the list of differences in provided modems.
U can see that the differences are based upon types and numbers of the data-ports they have.

But usually, all the modems displayed in the previous list are not available at all the BSNL offices. So if u have set ur mind on a prticular piece, u may have to buy it from outside. Sometimes BSNL offers free type1 modems to new customers for a brief period of time, in that case u wont have to buy the modem from BSNL or wont even have to pay the monthly rentals for modem.

[prices may vary with time and has probably been lowered as J4K has mentioned.]

Are you sure about the prices, Evander? Last checked, the Type I and Type III modems were price Rs. 1000/- whereas the type II and IV were priced Rs. 1600/-

The price quoted in that table was taken from bsnl bb application form.
after u mentioned it, i checked bsnl site and found out that they have quoted two different prices for the same modems. here is the link : Calcutta Telephones

anyway, the price may have fallen but the main reason behind that table was to point out the data-port differences in the modems, as vijayreddy had wanted to know.
