Default Unable to configure Linksys WRT54GC Router to work with BSNL Modem/router MT882

    All,

I recently bought Linksys WRT54GC router and I want to configure it with my BSNL Broadband modem/router SmartAX MT882 (from Hua Wei). However, I was unable to configure the linksys WRT54GC router to work with BSNL broadband.

The steps that I performed are listed below.

    1. Connect the ethernet cable from the SmartAX MT882 BNSL broadband modem to the "internet" port of the linksys WRT54GC router.

    2. Connect any one of the 4 ethernet ports of the linksys WRT54GC router to the ethernet port of my laptop (OS is Win XP pro).

    3. Opened the default page of the linksys WRT54GC router (192.168.1.1) and changed the IP address to 192.168.1.3.

    3. Opened the new confiugration page (192.168.1.3) of the linksys WRT54GC router and configured static IP address as below:

    IP Address : 192.168.1.25
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

    Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.1
    Secondary DNS: 218.248.240.179

    4. Enabled DHCP server in the setup page of the linksys WRT54GC router.

    5. Enabled DHCP for the ethernet card of the laptop (by selecting the radio button "Obtain an IP address automatically").

    6. Restarted the laptop, the linksys WRT54GC router and the BNSL SmartAX MT882 modem.

    7. Internet was not working. I was also unable to ping 192.168.1.1 (the snartAX MT882 modem).

Any suggestions/pointers/tips would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Regards,

    Praveen

    3. Opened the default page of the linksys WRT54GC router (192.168.1.1) and changed the IP address to 192.168.1.3.
The above is the problem. Two routers cannot exist on the same subnet. Your Smart AX modem/router has the IP address 192.168.1.1 and therefore its subnet is 192.168.1.x.

The Linksys router must be on a different subnet, e.g., 192.168.2.1.

DHCP must be ON in the Smartax modem and also on the Linksys modem.

Check the (sticky) guides in the Broadband How to section.

    Hi,

Tried to reset the router IP to 192.168.2.1. After resetting it to this value, I was unable to open the setup page at all. I was receiving "cannot find server" page. In fact, I had to reset to the factory settings to access the router once more.

Any implementable suggestions to make the linksys WRT54GC router to work with the smartax MT882 modem/router?

    Thanks in advance,

    Regards,

    Praveen

    Prashanth, thanks for your suggestions.

I followed the method that you have suggested and I only got the router to work with wired connections. This is because, the modem is connected to the ETHERNET ports of the router and not connected to the INTERNET port. Basically, in such a situation, doesn't the router act as a network hub/switch and not as a wireless router?

Though I was able to connect to the wireless network, I was not able to access the internet.

    Eagerly awaiting your suggestions/tips!

    TIA,

    Regards,

    Praveen

    16. Shutdown all the components in this order:

    a. Linksys WRT54GC Router

Hope it is helpful to folks like me who struggled to set this up.

    @sunpraveen

Congrats and thank you very much for the feedback.

Can you kindly confirm whether ,
The Note Icon has to be clicked,in dialup mode
( as seen in Summary page)again to restore connection,
if there is a power failure.

    @sunpraveen..
    thanks for giving the instructions

I was following all the steps as you mentioned in your 4th post in this thread.

I put the local IP address for my router as 192.168.1.50

at step 14 I encountered an error

after making all the changes in the basic setup page when i click save I get a message
"The WAN IP address is the same with the LAN IP address! Please check them again!"

Could you please tell me what to do?

    thanks
