I changed my plan. On jan 5th I experienced 2 mbps speeds but I am getting only 256 kbps now. I checked portal, my plan has been changed. My SNR margins are fine. What could be the problem?

now its 184 kbps!!
here's the pic
I had Home 500 before I switched to UL750 a year back. I was getting 200 KBps.
Does it hav anything to do with my modem?
Did u check it with www.dataone.in ? send me the picture shot from dataone.
I got 300 kbps. dataone usually posts a little higher speeds than others.
Yesterday I got 77kbps at 3:30 am.
for how long??
got 77 kbps for a day. my speed now is a constant 300 kbps.
got 238 kbps download speed and 395 kbps upload speed from speedtest. still no improvement. already made 2 complaints to bsnl
@Harsha,
I am home500 user and I am getting the the below speed from the speed test at dataone (the time now is 4 PM) although whenever I download any torrents, it does not go beyond 100 KB/sec.
Your Current Bandwidth Reading: 1.66 Mbps
(Download Rate at 211.98 KB/sec)

Don't check it from dataone server check from Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test (Brisbane & Mumbai server) another think if you get more than 256 kbps then you can't do anything BSNL never promise (in Home 500) of exact 2 mbps it's upto.
(but still my opinion if your speed is below 512 kbps then you can register a normal problem in BSNL customer care for low speed)
@Archer,
I have not done either. How does downloading multiple torrents help if I have not done either? (with due apologies for my ignorance).
I am using Bridge mode (no need to port forward). The download speed I get for a single torrent is upto 170 KBps. But if I download 3 torrents at the same time, then total downloading speed is upto 220 KBps.
This is the maximum speed I have got for Bit-torrent.
Port-Forwarding is important to get maximum speed.
No apologies required. Glad to be of help.
When you are downloading via torrents, the contents of the torrent (one file or multiple files) are downloaded piece by piece. The pieces are downloaded in any random sequence based on availability. You not only download but you also upload at the same time. Peers need to connect to your machine directly so that can give and take pieces of the files being downloaded. A tracker keeps track of what pieces you have for a particular file.
For peers to connect to your machine, a port must be open. A computer has 65536 ports numbered from 0 to 65535. 0 to 1023 are reserved ports. Normally all ports are closed to protect the computer from attacks. In your torrent client (such as uTorrent) you must select a port. And this port must be opened. If the port is not opened, you will still be able to download but the speed will be greatly reduced (by about 90~95%).
Opening ports is sometimes complicated. But by configuring the modem in bridge mode, this problem is removed. In bridge mode, all ports are open (this situation is risky and you must have a good AV and Firewall, in this case).
Even after opening the port, you may not still get enough speed because there are not enough seeds. Thus initially the download speed may be high but will drop down when the pieces you want are not found across any peer.
In this case, by having multiple torrents, you can get the maximum of the bandwidth. So, if one torrent is downloading slowly, others will download faster. This is similar to multi-tasking. Of course, the original (first) torrent will still take time till more seeds are found.

Thanks for explaining J4X. I didn't know how, even though I use it.![]()
@ Archer and just4kix, thanks for your explanations.
@just4kix, I just downloaded your guide for port forwarding and trying to understand it. Great stuff. Keep it up.
