Default BSNL beats me in the time race!

Two days ago I disconnected my modem according to my system time at 8.00 am.Later I went to the BSNL page and found the usage recorded till 8:02 am and around 2 MB booked as usage beyond free time.So I reset my system time by advancing 2 minutes.Today I switched off my modem at 7:57 AM.Later I find the time recorded till 8:02 AM even today and 2 MB recorded as usage beyond free time.

Are any synchronization methods available for BSNL time??:36::36:

You cannot synchronise with BSNL server clock.

You should reboot modem after 2:05 AM and before 7:55 AM to be on safe side.

Its always better to connect few mins after 2 AM and disconnect before 8 AM to be in the safe zone. However, I have noticed that BSNL clocks are synchronized with microsoft server.

To synchronize your CPU clock (windows only)

Goto Control Panel -> Date And Time. (alternately double click the clock on taskbar).

Goto Internet Time tab and select time.windows.com server and click Update Now

Please note I think its possible to synchronize your CPU with BSNL time directly but it might not be 100% acurate. To do this :-

    1) dial your bsnl connection (or turn on modem and allow it to connect for PPPoe mode)
    2) note the time of your connection. according to cpu watch.
    3) Disconnect
    4) Sometime later check BSNL portal and see at what time the connection took place.
That way you know how much your CPU clock differs from BSNL's and change the time accordingly.

But if BSNL changes their server time then its a problem. I've never noticed anything like it though. I simpy synchronize with time.windows.com and connect at 2:03:00 and disconnect at 7:57.00. BSNL portal varies +-3 secs maximum.

well theres not going to be much of a difference in the amount you download when you reboot your modem at exactly 8am or 10 min before ( like 7:50am).. better safe than sorry..

    For 10mins extra you can download : 10 x 200 x 60 / 1024 = 117.1875 MB (considering 200KBps download speed)

BSNL clocks are not synchronised with world clocks and there could be 2~3 minutes difference.

BSNL uses 30 min slots to log night usage at 15-min and 45-min past the hour. So if you start at 2 AM exactly (your clock), and BSNL server says 1:58 AM, then as per BSNL you have not started the download during the free time. So they revert back to 1:45 AM and count 1:45 AM to 2:15 AM as the usage and NOT FREE.

It sucks big time but that is how it is.

So do not be greedy. Give up those 5-10-15 minutes of free usage.

    a) Reboot, no earlier than 2:05 AM
    b) Reboot again, no later that 7:55 AM

Just remember one thing that when you restart your modem or switch of your modem the disconnect message dosenot send to the server. So if you think that you switch off your modem at 7:55 AM and you are safe but this is not true. Untile the modem send disconnect messsage to the server or reconnect again with the server the old session dosenot end untile 5 or 10 minutes. This times depaind on what time set in that server.
I am not usaing this methode like restart modem or switch of the modem.

To be on safer side, 2.15 am and 7.45 am will be convenient to start and stop the connection.

OK. But in my opinion, it is giving up too much of the allocated free time.

It is not as if that BSNL servers are way off unsynchronised when it comes to time. Usually, it is no more than 2~3 minutes - less most of the time.

For instance, I logged in to my modem just now and checked. My computer showed 10:42 AM while BSNL showed 10:45 AM.

i don't think George101 was lucky. if u notice in bsnl portal , there's hardly a change of 30s max, if it does change...

    Doubt is whether the modem
    shows
    1.our system time or
    2.bsnl server
3.or Bsnl usage portal ( data meter) server ( BSNL Portal)
    only for 117.xx.xx.xx
    4.or standard time.

Feel No3 as ref time , is the safest! ( whether accurate or not !)

Well, the modem is connected independently. So it cannot be my PC time. And there is a small difference between my CPU time and modem time.

I forgot to add that I have set up the modem to sync with internet time. So it could be time from internet server too.
