Default Am I getting this right

I have a home 500 connection. It is in pppoe mode. If I am to download during 2 am to 8 am. I have to use wake up on standby and also reboot the modem at 2.05 am using some software. Is this correct?

yeah. You need to reboot your modem say at 2.05 AM and then again reboot it at say 7.50 AM. else you will be responsible for the results

Automated rebooting of modem can be done by a program running on a PC (laptop or desktop). Naturally this means that the machine that is doing the modem reset must be up and running - it cannot be on standby/hibernate mode.

There are many topics on this topic in this forum. Just do a forum search and you will find them. Here are two methods:

    1. Automatic rebooting of router at 2 AM and 8 AM
    2. Ultimate Night Usage Manager.

At the risk of getting irritated, (and you seem to know this too), the modem must be rebooted after 2 AM and before 8 AM again. Now BSNL server clock may not be in sync with your own. So it is best that you do a modem reset/reboot at 2:05 AM and then again at 7:55 AM. The sole intentions is that you should not face hefty bills later on.

    Happy downloading.

I already went through those threads. After reading, the software has compatibility issues with vista and I feel it is not straight forward. I have not used it and this is only my opinion. How to conserve power during from 10 pm to 2.05 am?

You can go to this link and find out which devices you can turn off during that period.

I am aware one has to reboot. How much power can one save by putting a desktop to standby in comparison to it being left running

In standy mode ur system uses around ~ 5W / hr and in Hibernate mode it uses around ~1 W/ hr. Peak power depends solely on ur system hardware, atleast 250/300 W/hr for current pc hardware

the most one can do to save power while rebooting software is running in background on a laptop is to switch off wireless and set the screen to switch after a minute.
