Default BSNL to strengthen infrastructure - Pune

    BSNL to strengthen infrastructure
10 Jan 2009, 0208 hrs IST, Sarang Dastane, TNN

PUNE: In order to reduce congestion in mobile services and enhance the quality of landline and broadband services, BSNL Pune is to lay a high
bandwidth fibre optic cable of 200 km. Under the plan, all BSNL transmission centres will be connected by optical cables. The work is expected to be completed in three months.

The total plan will have an investment of Rs 22 crore and will cover routes in the city which witness exchange of data in high volumes.

In the last four months, the Pune Circle of the company has started a special initiative called ‘Congestion hatao', under which it aims to strengthen the capacity of its back-end infrastructure.

V K Mahendra, principal general manager (PGM), Pune circle, said, "With the introduction of high quality optical fibre cables, customers will be able to enjoy uninterrupted mobile and telephone services. Also, it will provide better assistance in equipping services like IPTV and Evideo and broadband which need a high bandwidth with no interruption. The optical cables will also provide expanded services to mobile BTS in routing more calls at one time. This could end the mobile congestion caused at rush hours as well as failure and jamming of the network."

According to Mahendra, "The plan includes the introduction of an alternative route. This will prevent any transmission centre from failing, even if the main system has problems. Work has already started and we are expecting to introduced the system in March. The plan will provide connectivity to new national-level BSNL projects in the city. It will also cater to the increasing bandwidth demands being registered from various segments like financial services, industries and educational institutions in city.

"All major cities across the country are already connected with optical cables," added Mahendra. "A similar kind of system is now being introduced in the cities, considering the increasing use of telephone services. Pune is the first city in the state to introduce the plan on such a wide scale."

I am not 100% sure. But logic says that BSNL being a nation-wide company, they cannot have a policy for one city only.
