    Default BSNL and OpenDNS

There was a post on this - whether OpenDNS is reducing the speed. I decided to put the theory to test. The results were startling ...

    Speed test with OpenDNS:

Since the OpenDNS server 208.67.222.222 is located at San Francisco, I did a speed test at San Jose location with the result:

Now compare with the speed test with BSNL DNS:

Does anyone have any theory? Is it same with other ISPs?

One more test with BSNL default DNS (after modem reboot):

Well, in my case, it is what I have stated. I do not understand it. Logically, I should not be getting any speed drop. But I tested it 3-4 times. Did save/reboot each time also.

I have been saying this for a long time that OpenDNS reduces my speed drastically. Thanks J4K for starting this thread. If I use OpenDNS , my browsing speed drops so low that I cant even open google. In my "sharing good dns ips" thread I even asked everyone not to post opendns ips. I would like to know the reason behind this too.
    I m using BSNL.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/388904105.png .. this is using opendns.. infact since 2 - 3 days i've been having some line problems.. resulting in low snr , hence low speed.. but usually using opendns i get a lot more than this.. maybe around 2500 ..
but the point is opendns shouldnt make any difference.. cause all that an opendns server is doing is telling you that speedtest.net is available at x.x.x.x ip.. once it tells you that , the role of a dns server is over.. unless there are some other links which need to be converted within the site's code.. but once the speedtest starts, you are DOWNLOADING a file from their servers and they calculate the time taken to download that file and accordingly calculate your speed.. during all this time , i dont think dns servers have any role to play!!!
i could be wrong , but this is what i feel!!!

I know the theory but what i want to know is, why does it happen to me all the time. I could never use opendns. why ???

I too wish to use openDNS because I am also having an account there and I have downloaded the widget that is allowing me to keep surfing safe from children at home. I know it is not a full proof solution but it is working fine.

But I cannot sacrifice speed for this.

There is no rational explanation other than "BSNL (some circles) is probably deliberately restricting access to openDNS servers". They are probably not blocking it - that would be illegal - just making the way troublesome.

@just4kix and other members who face this problem
could you download a file ..http download.. and mention its average transfer rate ..
    @evander
have you confirmed that you are using opendns servers as PRIMARY dns server..

It seems that u are getting the correct speed (256-201 = 55 kbps lower than usual ) for ur plan. and the ping of 404ms is also quite normal for us indians.
Did u notice any unusual slowdown lately ?
I myself got a ping of 505ms from washington server and I can browse or download quite normally.
Now to the port issue...... yes, if u have a port related problem, it can slowdown or even stop ur net access . I had such an issue 2 months back and when I complained, bsnl changed my port at their end and then all came back to normal. But first u have to decide if u do have a problem or not bro. Cause from the data given, it seems that there is no problem.
    feedback requested.
