Question funny problem with linksys WRH54G and GLB-502T

    hi guys.....my first thread.....

ive jus bought a wifi router - linksys WRH54G to use with my adsl router/modem D-Link GLB-502T.......

now ive got a kinda funny/weird prob in getting this to work.....here's the scenario....

the adsl modem/router is connected in PPPoE-always on mode, it works perfectly when connected directly to a pc/laptop, has dhcp enabled, n ive connected it to the internet/WAN port in the wifi router......

next comes the wifi router i got yesterday......

ive config'd it to work with my adsl router.....(using WPA2, with a 40 char key, n MAC filtering, no SSID broadcast, no wireless management allowed, signal strength set to low, i.e. all security enabled as per a guide i found here in the forums)......ive put the wifi router at 192.168.2.1 and adsl router at 192.168.1.1.......

wifi router is connected to the adsl modem with the ethernet cable from the adsl modem plugged into internet port of the wifi router, and the desktop pc connected to the LAN 1 port of the wifi.....

both work perfectly after ive done the following......this is funny prob ive got:

when i switch on the mains supply (both adsl router n wifi on same power strip).....the router just wont show the ADSL link....and hence no pppoe.....(happens only when connected to the wifi router and no problem when connected directly to the pc)

but if i remove the cable from adsl modem to the wifi router and restart (or start the adsl modem without the ethernet cable connected), it will connect to adsl n pppoe and if i connect the cable to the wifi router after its done with connecting the pppoe.....it works flawlessly.....no problem at all.....

n yeah, after this procedure, there's no further problem, laptop connects to the wifi network, and internet works on both, the lappie(actually a lenovo S10 netbook and the desktop PC)

of course, its nothing much as it works perfect that way....but its a bit irritating to remove the cable before starting up n reconnecting after the router finishes the authentication.....

hoping that somebody here must be having some kinda solution to this....

thanx in advance for all your help n wish u all a happy new year!!

    Dipen

hmm.. you dont really need to do that.. have you waited for long time like 2 to 3 min to see if it gets connected?? or what if you leave the wifi routerr OFF and only adsl modem ON?

no....it doesnt work no matter how long i wait.....(i.e. the adsl n pppoe leds will stay off n power n lan leds will light up)

well, it works if i keep the wireless router off while keeping the adsl modem on and turn on the wifi after the adsl led starts blinking on the GLB-502T.....and actually thats the thing im doing right now.....but its kinda the same as keeping the cable unplugged while turning the modem on......:36:

hoping that ive goofed up the config n som1 will have a solution to make it work by itself.....till then ill continue with the 'switch on wireless after the modem starts connecting' method......

    thanks for the help, superprash

    Setup:
    INFO: Desktop + laptop
    GLB502T+WRH54G ( WiFi router)
    "Always ON" connection
Problem: Power on again: modem fails.

1... switch on WiFi router first. Then GLB502T

    2.....Please post ipconfig/all data.

    3....... or just try this.
Connect RJ45 to WiFi router LAN port !
    instead of WAN/Internet port .
    Start system modem and router.
    Feed back!

    Unhappy

    1. switching on wifi router then glb-502t adsl modem wont work.....the adsl led just wont light up.....but if the modem is switched on first n then the wifi router everything works perfectly.

    2. ipconfig/all (attached) [oh,by the way, the screenshot has been taken after the connection is up and running using the power on-modem 1st-wifi 2nd-method]

    3. on connecting to lan port, internet wont work.

still scratchin my head n hopin that there's some explanation to this thing......coz i dont see any possible reason for the dlink modem not to connect to adsl if the wifi router is powered up alongside it or before it, but work only after its powered n or connected after the modem starts blinkin its adsl led....n yeah, it works if i connect the modem directly to a pc and power on the pc before the modem

i have a suspicion that its a conspiracy by dlink

will try phoning dlink's tech support tommo for a solution.....

id almos picked up a dlink wifi router dir 300.....was cheaper by 200 bugs n looked sleeker too......but finally went in for the wrh54g coz linksys is known to be better....wonder if i made a mistake, although i dont think the dlink thing wouldnt have caused exactly the same damn problem.....!!

    Question

foned dlink tech support......the guy there told me that it is "standard procedure" to turn on the modem before any wireless router

he refused to accept it was a problem, said that i knew the solution s there was no use talkin abt it.......-.-"

hoping that som1 here may be able to provide an answer:bored:.......

The cable connecting both the devices...is it configured as straight through or crossover ? Normal LAN cable is straight through. It cannot be used to connect both the routers. Routers should be connected with crossover cables.

Default It would be an IP conflict

    Hi icecreeper,

I had a similar issue, where my computer was directly connecting to the internet using the MTNL provided modem, but would refuse to connect to my WRH54-G wireless router.

The issue was that both the MTNL modem and the wireless router try to take up the address 192.168.1.1. This, I believe, leads to some IP conflicts, because of which the setup doesn't work.

In my case, I changed the wireless router's IP to 192.168.2.1, and that solved the problem. Do let me know if this fixes your issue.

    Regards,
    Akash.

ive already got the 2 routers on different ips......had mentioned it in first post too.....

in my case both the routers work perfectly without any conflicts/issues but only if they're turned on one after the other (modem before wireless)......

seems ive got some different prob......

Ur customer care guy has got it right. Its always general procedure to turn on the modem first and then the router, because the router does the authentication and other stuff as soon as it turns on and hence the modem should fully be on and specifically the 'link' light should be on before the router attempts to connect to the internet.
