Default Solved BSNL Connection in Fedora 10

    Hi guys

I managed to set up a BSNL broadband connection in Fedora 10. Please note that this is for those who have a CONTINUOUS CONNECTION to BSNL (i.e. for those who don't require a user name and password to connect.)

Before that please thank forum members ShAdOwCoN, Matrix, superprash2003 and essbebe for their valuable suggestions in the 'Help to set up BSNL in Fedora 10 thread in this forum

I am writing this for absolute newbies and beginners to Fedora 10.

    METHOD

First connect your wire to the respective socket of your laptop or computer and start Fedora 10.
On the taskbar click on SYSTEM then ADMINISTRATION then NETWORK.

Enter your password to login as the administrator/root user. This opens the NETWORK CONFIGURATION window with four tabs i.e. Devices, Hardware, DNS and Hosts.

On the DEVICES tab double click on ethO and this will open the ETHERNET DEVICE window that has three tabs i.e. General, Route and Hardware Device.

On the GENERAL tab leave the nickname as ethO, then
    TICK
    1. Controlled by network manager and
    2. Activate device when computer starts

Then select the Statically set IP Address and enter the IP address, Sub net mask and the default gateway. these will usually be

    IP :192.168.1......
    Subnet mask :255.255........
    Default gateway 192.168.1......

[You can find these numbers on your MS windows XP Pro, by opening the NETWORK CONNECTIONS, double click on LAN or HIGH SPEED CONNECTION icon to open the Local Area connection properties window. Highlight the Internet protocol (TCP/IP) icon and then click properties to obtain the IP details etc].

After entering these click OK to close the ETHERNET DEVICE window. Also close the NETWORK CONFIGURATION window. This will ask for save settings or restart with new settings, click OK and if successfull the NETWORK MANAGER applet (looks like two computers side by side)located in the task bar sends out a pop up saying CONNECTED. If you right click on the icon and click on the CONNECTION INFORMATION, It will give details such as IP, 100Mbps etc. Also note that it may show the wrong subnet mask address this time-Don't panic. Just close it.

Although you may be connected, it will not be possible to open websites, because we haven't entered the DNS numbers. For this on the taskbar click SYSTEM then PREFERENCES then NETWORK CONFIGURATION. This will open the NETWORK CONNECTIONS window which has 5 tabs i.e.Wired, Wireless, Mobile Broadband,VPN and DSL.

Click on the WIRED tab click ADD. This will open a window named EDITING WIRED CONNECTION 1. Here TICK the CONNECT AUTOMATICALLY and then click on the IPV4 settings tab. For the METHOD select 'MANUAL' in the drop 'down menu. Then click ADD to add the ADDRESS, SUBNET MASK and GATEWAY numbers like we did before.

Then enter the DNS server number (This is the Preferred DNS server number found in the Internet protocol (TCP/IP) properties window on XP). Forget the search domains and you need not enter the alternate DNS number as well!.

Click APPLY. This will connect finally to the INTERNET.

    Happy browsing.

As already mentioned in the earlier thread I use Mandriva 2008, there is some difference in the interface between mandriva and fedora. Also I am in bridge mode not always on mode. If you wish to set up in bridge mode I can provide help, if required.

    Hi!! everyone.
I figured out a way to connect to bsnl broadband on Fedora 10.
Its quite easy once u understand how linux feels.
    Nyways
First make sure u have ur username and password ready to connect to d net.
For others who do not require a username and password go to india broadband forums.
    ok heres the 1st step
go to system>administration>network device control there u will see sumthng like eth0
u will have to give d root password.
ny ways if u dont see eth0 den go to system>administration>network
tick controlled by network manager & activate when system starts.
    then save all settings.
its done lan is connected u will se 2 computers side by side in the upper taskbar.
    Next
system>administration>network create a new connection by selecting new.
    select xdsl connection.
enter username, password and in other fields like ehernet device select ur ehernet device and in d service provider name type BSNL.
