BSNL to use Redback SmartEdge for broadband

Redback Networks, an Ericsson company providing video-centric routers for 75 percent of the world's largest triple-play networks, announced that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) of India will use Redback's SmartEdge family of multi-service edge routers as a part of its expansion plan to deliver broadband services to more than 5 million business and residential users.

Currently, BSNL uses Redback's SmartEdge 800 multi-service edge routers to support 2.5 million broadband subscribers. Under the expansion, BSNL plans to deploy additional Redback SmartEdge 800 multi-service edge routers to support up to 2.5 million more subscribers across India.

"BSNL's selection of Redback for its network expansion further validates the technical advantages of our SmartEdge platform and the exceptional service it helps carriers deliver to customers," said Herve Brunet, Vice President of Sales and Operations in Asia for Redback Networks. "India continues to be one of the largest growth opportunities for Redback in greater Asia. Redback and Ericsson are dedicated to helping BSNL build a full service broadband network that will provide the highest quality data, voice and video services to subscribers across this region."

BSNL is the seventh largest telecommunications company in world with more than 70 million wire-line and wireless subscribers. BSNL generated more than $8 billion in revenues last year and reported more than $2.26 billion in net income.
