Let me clear your confusion mate, here goes

Type IV= Modem + Inbuilt wifi

Type I= Only modem with one Ethernet port

Wireless router= WiFi router to route your internet connection through LAN and through wireless

However you have to connect the Type I modem to the wireless router through a crossover cable (similar to LAN cable but with different config.)

Hope i am clear enough!

My suggestion
Buy Type IV modem blindly thats it, you will appreciate it trust me!

if you need a simple modem means single port and without wireless.
then get from bsnl

else,
get from market only

I would also suggest sticking with BSNL modems. UTStar models and Nokia Siemens models are exceptionally better.

I also recommend u buy modem from the bsnl and should be tpye-ii modem with wifi .
and one more thing if ur modem /router become faulty then bsnl will change it
and i dont get about it compatibility with vista or windows7.
according to me
it is just a hardware only for usb support we have to install driver(which may be compatible with vista or windows7 ) but for lan nothing just insert lan cable it start work.

^^ BSNL will change the modem only if it is on rent and/or the modem is less than one year old (from the date of selling). USB drivers for Windows Vista were not available, hence such modems cannot be coupled with such OSes.
