1.You can rent the modem/router from BSNL, and try it.
2.When you buy other models check Vista compatible.
No guarantee about compatibility for Windows 7.

    3. If using a Desktop computer to operate on
Wireless mode you need additional wireless LAN card.
    ( Cost about Rs 1000/=)

    4. If you are having a laptop computer Wireless LAn card usually inserted in right ( Dell Inspiron ) side, or left side ( Sony VAIO etc )

    5. Click link "Announcement " above.

If its working with Windows Vista, then it should be working with Windows 7 too..

Also make sure that u buy a Vista compatable wifi adapter.

BSNL offers only non-wifi Modem on rental @ Rs.60 per mth. For someone in doubt regarding compatibility issues with Windows 7, this could be the best option. However, then the sacrifice is the Wifi option. For this it is possible to connect the BSNL modem to a wifi router. These days most laptops come with inbuilt Wifi. But for getting a PC to work with Wifi, in most cases a USB Wifi dongle would be the best option. However, then again, the compatibility issue comes up.
Ideally all Vista compatible hardware should work with Windows 7 also. But when it comes to Bill Gates, one never knows.

    Hi,
It is better if you purchase the modem from BSNL instead of renting it or getting from someone else.
The second option is get a DLink ADSL modem which work great with BSNL BB.

    Thanks.

All the modems available are Vista compatible, it depends on what method your are using to connect to the internet. In case your modem is configured to automatically connect to the internet and you are connecting through the ethernet or wireless connection then there is no need to install the any software. The computer(Any OS) will be online as soon as it gets an IP from the modem. In case you are connected to the modem using a USB connecton and running Windows vista on your computer then you need to install Vista compatible modem drivers which are available with all the latest modems. Use Google in case you dint have the drivers for Vista,

    Thanks.

Buying a modem from BSNL would be the best option. If there are issues with the BB or modem, it might be easier for the BSNL customer support staff to help you in Trouble shooting Issue. As for comptability, since you have LAN card I do not think you will have much issues.

About Vista / Windows 7 compatibility:

There are two issues - a) IPv6 support b) USB driver availability

    a) Most new modems from BSNL have support for IPv6. If IPv6 support is not available, then you can downgrade Vista/W7 TCP/IP to IPv4. Or you can send the modem back to BSNL and ask for IPV6 firmware upgrade.

    b) USB is not an issue if you use Ethernet LAN (RJ45) connection.

And as stated above in more than one post, it is better to buy/rent modem from BSNL because in case of issues, they will support you. If the modem is purchased from market, they may blame the issue on modem and wash their hands off.

I know that a Type IV (4 LAN + wifi) modem is a best bet but if it is flexibility that you desire you can purchase Type I modem from BSNL and a Wireless router from market. But it will work out more expensive.

I would personally recommend you to buy Type IV modem from BSNL as it is simply the best option or you can say "Cheap and Best" no doubt abt it!!

If you want to purchase a wifi router from outside then be ready to pay atleast more than rupees 3,000/- though i will not recommend this but anyways it is your money and will be your decision!!

Ask anytype of doubt if you are still having feel free to type in!

Let me clear your confusion mate, here goes

Type IV= Modem + Inbuilt wifi

Type I= Only modem with one Ethernet port

Wireless router= WiFi router to route your internet connection through LAN and through wireless

However you have to connect the Type I modem to the wireless router through a crossover cable (similar to LAN cable but with different config.)

    Hope i am clear enough!

    My suggestion
Buy Type IV modem blindly thats it, you will appreciate it trust me!

if you need a simple modem means single port and without wireless.
    then get from bsnl

    else,
    get from market only

I would also suggest sticking with BSNL modems. UTStar models and Nokia Siemens models are exceptionally better.

I also recommend u buy modem from the bsnl and should be tpye-ii modem with wifi .
and one more thing if ur modem /router become faulty then bsnl will change it
and i dont get about it compatibility with vista or windows7.
    according to me
it is just a hardware only for usb support we have to install driver(which may be compatible with vista or windows7 ) but for lan nothing just insert lan cable it start work.

^^ BSNL will change the modem only if it is on rent and/or the modem is less than one year old (from the date of selling). USB drivers for Windows Vista were not available, hence such modems cannot be coupled with such OSes.

USB speed maybe less than ethernet connection. But all these comes into consideration when BSNL starts giving away 12 mbps or more. Until then USB sluggishness can be ignored since BSNL is giving away just 2-8mbps as of today.

USB is highly unrelible, frequent disconnection are common with USB. as its a driver issue.

so better, spend 200bucks and invest in lan card
