    Default Speed???

I am from Chennai. My plan is combo 500.
While testing the bandwidth in bsnl, i am getting the result as follows.

Your current bandwidth reading : 1.64 Mbps

    (Download Rate at 209.71 KB/sec)

What does this mean?? Is it satisfactory under this plan???

I feel the speed is very low. If I am video chating with somebody the motion is very slow.. some times it stucks for minutes..

I used different servers to measure the speed and getting different results.

    1) speed.airtelbroadband.in gives : 128 kbps download and 355 kbps upload!!!!!!!!!

    2) speedtest.in gives: bandwidth 175 kbps
Expected download rate from our servers: 21.88 KB/sec.

    3) speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test[/url] download 206 kbps upload 139 kbps..

What shall i do to increase the speed??

i am bit confused coz there should not be such a big difference as you said BSNL speed test says 1.64Mbps which looks more then enough and as other speedtest are saying less then 200 kbps sounds very slow.
Can you please put some screen shots from Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
and please update your modem/ router details too.

The advertised Speed is given in kbps which means Kilo bits per second. To get the download speed you have to divide it by 8 i.e. convert it to kilo Bytes per second (kBps).

    So 1.64 Mbps = 1024 * 1.64 /8 = 209.92 KBps

Download speed is how fast you download from other servers when download a file from microsoft then you'll be show your download speed. Upload Speed is the speed at which you can send data to other servers, for example how fast you can attach a file while sending an e-mail.

Bsnl Home 500 gives upto 2Mbps speed download speed.
I.e. you should be able to download at maximum of 2*1024/8=256 KBps speed. But its not always possible to get such speeds. Depending on the server load speed may vary. But you should still get above 200 KBps dowload speed.

as smoothvibes said go to speedtest.net and do a speed test there and post back. Its more reliable than other most other sites.

Its not possible to extend beyond the maximum but you can optimize your broadband. Take a look at he following posts.

ITS NOT THE MAX SPEED BUT MANY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE WORSE NIGHTMARES.

MAX speed is = 256 KBPS.

Its an irony that I used to get 330 KBps speeds when I got dataone service, 2 years ago. Now it can only happen in my dreams

If you get ~210 KBPs DL speed during night UL hours then consider yourself to be fortunate.

i meant 2 years back when i had bsnl, i had applied for the 2mbps unlimited per month for 999.
at the end of the month i had dnlds of 210gigs.and my bill was INR 75000 !!

so i guess if bsnl does provide such speeds and one is able to dnld without worry, great!!!!

May be you mean its strange that bsnl is providing such good service .
Actualy bsnl is (probably) trying to provide a decent service but did not have a (ahem) commendable success.
