A very good and meaningful post by essbebe keep it up!

Just in short, basically all you have to do is to connect your modem to PPPoE mode. thats it

    @amitkool21
Why didnt you took a thorough look at the site especially in the "Broadband How to" section?? That would have helped you

well... i use 3 computers including my laptop using the same connection -> this is how i do it ...

first u need to get a 4port/8port switch of any brand preferably netgear/dlink

simply insert the main wire coming out of the modem/router to one of the ports of the switch and then connect the two pcs via two different wires from the switch ...

to make it more clear here is a pic of my setup ....

the black wire is the modem wire ...

this is how they do it in cyber cafes ...

    In simple words:
you need to buy a multi port router or implement Internet connetion sharing but it would require a extra lan card

ICS can be implemented but the server always needs to be online for other PCs to connect to the internet. But with multiport router the router need to be online only.

if ur having type one modem/router(shoulb be in pppoe mode) then u have to purchase 4 /8 port hub to work two pc on single broadband and if ur having type -II modem then it is already having more than 1 ethernet port so configure type-II modem in pppoe mode and use more than one pc on single bb

    just simple

cost of 4/8 hub is not more nearly 300-500 bugs.cable from modem i.e ethernet cable terminated in hub and from hub u can connect 4 to 8 pc

hub and switch is same thing

and u said is useful only when he is type one modem if he is having type two modem then as i already said use pppoe and use it

ok tell me what is this rep power

yes you have the flexibility to put different speed caps for different pcs.

The cost of hub + cost of modem >>> (is greater than) cost of router !! So its wiser to spend directly on a router.

no... niether u need a multiport router nor any pc is considered as server here and none of the pc needs to remain on always ...

again go through the process with the pic i posted ... only the modem/router needs to be on ... and u can connect as many pcs as there are ports in the switch irrespective of any other pc...

U are just confusing the whole process. U have a modem and a hub. U connect the modem to hub and connect the rest of the pcs to the hub

Instead of investing on two items (modem and a hub), routers which does the function of the same are available. U can connect as many as 4 pcs to a router. Besides the router gives much functionality than modem-hub combination such as load balancing.

Yes. They do. Atleast D-Link routers do. Speeds can be assigned for different pcs, websites can be blocked.
