Thanks cool_techie_tvm. I will tell them when we talk about the problem.

In the mean time one good development happened . I talked to D-Link Support and they advised me to Reset the router to the factory default mode by pressing the button at the back of the Router. They also told that even after it if the problem persists then I have to report them again.

I did that and as of now it is working good. I have not found any problem as such till now. Now I will have to again wait and observe and then talk to exchange people.

Thanks totallyfandu for your suggestion. Actually they (Exchange people) have reset my port a number of times. It is clear that it didn't work. So now as I mentioned above have to wait and observe for a day, perhaps, and then request the exchange people to change the port.

Resetting the router is one of the basic troubleshooting steps. I thought u must have already done it, hence didnt think of posting it in here. Sorry, my mistake. Besides we need to know the appropriate VCI/VPI values while reconfiguring the modem after resetting.

Anyways nice to know the connection is working hassle free.

No I didn't reset because I had and have no idea about networking. So the initial doubts prevented me to do it.

Regarding the connection no it isn't hassle free. In between I had again problems. The router lights were on but pages like hotmail and even Indiabroadband didn't open.

It looks like my problem is not going to go away so easily.

I just talked to the Telephone exchange people and mentioned about port and also about the earthing problem. They said they are again checking the line but at the same time they told me when the main site (calcuttatelephones.com) is opening they don't feel there is any problem in the line or router.

That's the latest status. I am waiting for their response about the line check result.

That is one of their tricks to fool subscribers. State some indian site (probably BSNL's) and if it opens up fine then the connection is absolutely ok, according to them. Tell them your predicament. That microsoft related domains are not opening up.

Yes, I understood that. You are correct. It's a standard reply. I think I have to go to the exchange personally and talk to the right people there or bring someone with me to check the line.

Do something like this. While pinging a certain website, note down the IP address. Now enter the IP address on the web browser. Is the page opening up? Please report back with your findings.

Aha. That is where the DNS server comes into play. U see we people cannot memorize all the ip addresses available for every webpage. So IP addresses are translated into alphabets which can be easily memorized.

DNS server basically acts as a telephone directory. When we enter an URL, the DNS server is contacted and corresponding IP of the webpage (to be opened) is found out from database. So if u are unable to browse on entering the url, but is able to browse using the website ip, then definitely something is wrong with your DNS setup.

I hope u understood what i am trying to convey over here.

Then it would be something in the terms of problems with the routing procedure of the particular ISP. Make sure no proxy severs are configured in the browser's connectivity options too.

Instead of sticking with the default DNS servers of BSNL why dont u switch to professional DNS services like OpenDNS or DNSAdvantage?

Update on the developments about the problem.

I did two things :
1. I still have the other Router which I purchased from BSNL. So I thought to change the Router and see what happens.
2. Change the DNS that BSNL people gave me.

It seems that the above changes brought a better result. I will not say that it solved the problem because to say that it's better to wait for some more time (may be the full day today) and observe.

But overall I am almost back to normal browsing experience. Now the problem of pages not opening for some sites is almost gone. Except two occasions when also after two refreshed it opened.

So overall it looks good as of now. I will furhter update here to keep you all informed about the situations.

Just in case the Router is the problem, can you please suggest me a better router which works good with Dataone connection. I will share the connection among two PC's and in future may add a Laptop also. Someone suggested me that LinkSys is very good. But I thought you can suggest me better. So enhance my knowledge with your views.
