In the BSNL tariff plans page the effective
date of reduction is not mentioned.

Could be from 1st Aug 2008.

    My A.O (telephones) told me
the excess rental will be ( Now Rs 60 P.M )
adjusted after getting clarification from D.O.T
    regarding actual implementation date.

Although BSNL has reduced their modem rates, but then also i recommend to purchase a new modem from the market like Netgear DM111PUSP it is cheaper, compact and reliable.

well cool techie, may be u need to give some English tuition to him.

Personally I would say it is always advisable to go for taking modem on rent from BSNL.
The modem remains the property of BSNL. So anytime it develops a fault, they are bound to replace it which is like lifetime warantee. Unlike outright purchase where warantee is for a limited period only.

But we need to keep on paying the rent on monthly basis until we decide to stop using their broadband. Most of the modems supplied by BSNL nowadays are robust especially the UTStar series. For outright purchase the guarantee is for one year from date of sale of the modem.

u can treat the rent as more like an AMC cost.

But of course, it depends on individual choice only.

Yes i understand, but 600/- or 960/- per year (2 years) is too much for the AMC of a ADSL modem

Yep, that why I purchased it.
using it from past 2.5yrs, it costed me Rs.1500/-

on rent it would have been around 1800/- and still to pay more.

so for longer time, best is to buy
