Configure the connection in pppoe mode. In this mode the username/password is set in the modem and it authenticates with the BSNL server and establishes the connection. Since everything is done in the modem, it will work flawlessly regardless of the operating system.

In your current configuration i presume the server pc must always kept on, then only the client pc can browse. Once u enable the pppoe mode in the router such a necessity can also be avoided.

Please state the modem make/model so that more info about how to configure it in pppoe mode can be posted..

Assume u r in bridge mode. if both use the internet simultaneouesly u can setup the system connected to the modem as a gateway to the other system (friends). U can enable squid proxy in the system connected to the modem. But the problems are 1. the system connected to the modem need 2 NICs one to get the bridge mode connection to internet and the other one to act as a local LAN. 2. If your system (one connected to the modem) should be on and connected to internet for the friend's system to connect to the internet. If this is acceptible to you u can get any further assistance from me. I use mandriva so there will be difference in setting up. but don't see any problem as there is a large community out there in case of any problem

Wouldnt it be more easier and merrier if a simple pppoe connection is setup in the modem? Also it eliminates the condition that server pc is to be switched on all the time...

Even if it is in pppoe mode the server pc has to be always on unless there r mutiple lan port/WiFi available in the router (which is not mentioned in the original post). People should understand that while asking for any help, they should provide as much detail to get the problem solved at the earliest.
