what modem are you using? provide the brand and the model number. what is the need of backing up the firmware if you can download the latest firmware from the modem's website.

Its wiser to create a backup of the existing firmware before proceeding with updation of it. Because if all hell breaks loose, we can always update the router with the old default firmware.

Any firmware of any particular router can be easily found in the interwebs. Usually they do not distribute firmwares, because people with absolutely no technical background will tend to use it and will result in destruction of their router. Hence they are not found in CDs which come along with routers!!

    @eruptionjojo

First check the FW version in your
unit and your friends's. Give details here.

FW update is usually attempted for additional
menu options like DDNS/SNMP Client Tr_069
etc. ( original modem's or DDRT Tomato etc )

FW updates are available for ZTE Zxdsl 831Aii.
    ( version needed)
    Para two:
    (a) Whatever problem your friend is facing
can be pinpointed by swapping the modems.
Use dialer mode in both ( ASSUMING iSP IS BSNL)
    and give here feedback.
    OR
    (b)Settings in your modem,
if working oK can be saved to harddisk and
    updated in your friend's modem.
( for same ISP userID/PW to be entered in PPP/PPPoE
    "alwaysOn" mode )

    (B) for Portforwarding Uttorrents etc with screen

    shots.
Port forwarding in ZTE ZXDSL 831AII modem

    (C) If you attempt FW be prepared to buy a new

    router for your friend!!!!

    (D) Device status page of your router, is same as given below.

The backup option in the MANAGEMENT menu only backs up the BB settings, as far as I know. I do not think that routers have option to backup firmware. But I may be wrong on this. I never checked.
