its always advisable to have a soft firewall in the PC/Laptop end as it often helps in reducing the impact of any unfortunate virus attack by not allowing it to access the net.

Default Which is better option bridge or pppoe and why

Bridged is better if you have only desktop to connect through wire.

PPPoE is advisable if you have to setup WiFi on your laptop and you are connecting using BSNL ADSL modem and with your personal WiFi Router.

Few minutes back, I have successfully setup my wifi router, and accessing bsnl broadband on my laptop. This wifi is done using PPPoE on Modem and then settings on my wifi router.

Everything looks fine. I have DLink 524 router.

Enable the internal firewall of the router. That should take care of the majority of the threats.

It depends upon the router which u are using. I can enable in mine. (DSL 2540T). But that will be no use if router firewall is enabled in bridged mode. Its is safer and more effective to use a software firewall while in bridged mode.

Is there any internal firewall in BSNL ADSL modems ? I don't think that PPOE is safer when compared to Bridge mode !

Most of the ADSL modems feature an internal firewall, which will be useful only when pppoe mode is activated. In bridged mode u need to use a separate firewall solution, but in pppoe mode, the router firewall takes care of it.

I don't think that the internal firewall(in PPOE mode) of the BSNL ADSL modem is strong enough like a software firewall ?

That means both the modes are equally unsafe without any software firewalls.

Well hardware firewall is always robust than software based firewalls. MNCs and other establishments which value their security employ hardware firewalls to protect the data.

Do u want to use the laptop + another PC to access the net? Then u need to enable pppoe/router mode in the router to use the wifi facility in the laptop + PC simultaneously.

Default Need info reg Bridge

Hello,
After reading this long thread I am confused.
1. I thought I should always use PPoE as current configuration. I am in 500 C plan. Is it better for me to use Bridge?
2. I schedule the PC to start (from Hibernation) to download at 2AM. Is this possible if I shift to Bridge mode?
3. How safe is Bridge mod? I have Windows firewall.

4. If possible, let me know how to setup Bridge on UT300R2U.

Use The little I know about Dataone Broadband Services offered by BSNL to configure your router in bridged mode.

Yes, it will be easier for u to schedule for night time usage when in bridged mode

Invest on a software firewall other than windows firewall when being in bridged mode.

  1. You can use whichever one easier to you. I use Bridge mode because, I don't have to port forward manually. And it's easier to manage the connection for Night Unlimited plans.
  2. Yes it is. But I never tried it in Bridge mode or pppoe. I wait till 2:00 AM and uses the software Shutter to disconnect/hang-up connection and shut down computer at 7:50 AM.
  3. Not so safe. It's important to use a 3rd part software firewall when using Bridge mode (eg: Zone Alarm, Commodo Firewall etc).
  4. You can find the guide in Broadband How to section. This thread might help: Bridge Mode
One more good thing about Bridge mode is it's very useful, if you are a free Rapidshare user as it's needed to reset IP after every download.

Zone Alarm is one of the best firewall software. Zone Alarm Basic Firewall is available for free. It's easy to use/configure.
